This could be a bit of a long thread, but hopefully not!

Friend is having problem with her neighbours downstairs (house converted into a flat, friend is top floor).

Friend has two dogs, Yorkshire Terrier, and some kind of Poodle/Collie cross. One and Four years old (ish).

Downstairs are complaining that her dogs are constantly barking, putting snidy comments on Facebook (I've told her to block/delete, but she wants to see what they are doing). Gone to environmental health about it. My friend is now really worried.

When someone is home, the dogs are fine, will bark if someone knocks on the door (don't all dogs?), and sometimes go a bit mad chasing the cat, but this stops after five minutes, and isn't late at night (no later than 7pm, if they do it then they get told off).

My friend doesn't believe her dogs are barking constantly when shes out, but IF they are, what can be done to stop them? Lots of attention given, exercised regularly, water down when left (never for too long, couple of hours at the most).

I've suggested leaving the radio on in the background, and perhaps some clothes that my friend has worn for a few days so her 'scent' is there. We've tried the radio, and not heard anything since.

I was just wondering if anyone has any other ideas.

I've just popped out for 20 minutes to do a bit of shopping, sat in the car for 20 minutes outside, and didn't hear a peep from them, until I put the key in the door.

They've also put bhy comments on Facebook about the noise they are making, whilst I've been here, and they've not been making a sound.

So, I think they aren't as bad as they say they are, but want to try things so if anything does happen, my friend can say 'this is what I'm trying'.

There have been no complaints from any other neighbours. One of the neighbours said the person before used to have a German Shepard living here (two bed flat, not huge!), that was always making a noise, but downstairs got on with upstairs, so nothing was said. They have complained about a number of neighbours in the past, so it appears they are just serial complainers in my mind.

They have also complained about my friends daughter making a lot of noise at night, and that shes always running around. She is two years old, shes bound to run around, and shes in bed by 1730 every night! These are the type of things they complain about, so makes me think they are making something out of nothing.

A lot of it isn't needed, but thought I would add a bit of backstory.

On another note, it was this dog that kept pissing/stting inside, that has now stopped smile.

Oh noes, comments of facebook. That is a step too far.

Don't people talk to each other anymore.

Fact is, if you live in Flats, there is bound to be some noise. Perhaps your friend could look at improving the flooring and sound insulation ?

Dogs bark, babies cry it kind of goes with the territory

Theres a lot more to it than just the Facebook comments, not going to put too much about it though.

I believe the floor is already insulated, we can't hear day to day noise, other than when they get back from the pub late, shouting/swearing/throwing up.

I don't think my friend has anything to worry about, but want to suggest some ideas just incase.

My next door neighbour has a dog which is fairly quiet until left alone, at which point it starts howling and doesn't stop till she gets back (which can be hours on end)
I complained, and basically got told 'tough st', which is true from what I can make out.
I want to kill the damn thing.
Dog people won't understand that point of view...

I completely understand, I'm not a dog person at all, a few years ago I used to cross the road when I saw one.

I have a dog, the very last thing I want is for my dog to be so unhappy at being left being that it constantly howls.

There is plenty of good advice on how to deal with separation anxiety in dogs, leaving the radio on is certainly one way as above. But also managing the dogs expectations by going out and coming back quickly, not over rewarding the dog on return (just ignoring it) etc etc.

I can imagine it is incredibly frustrating to live next door or above a howling hound, but really what kind of owner allows this to happen?

We had it with my neighbours got two letters from the council on separate occasions saying that they had received complaints that our dogs were barking all day and were a noise nuisance.
The dogs were not alone all day as the MIL came around for them 3 times in the day. I spoke to the council and explained it wasn't our dogs and every house in the street had dogs so how do they know it's mine. I then asked all the neighbours who had complained and every single one denied it. We then took one dog to the MIL's every morning and one to the kennels everyday for four months. After four months we received another letter saying that we had not done anything to stop the dogs barking during the day as they had had another complaint.
I sent the council a registered letter complete with a copy of the kennel receipts and I haven't heard anything else from them this was four years ago now. I went around to all the neighbours and explained that I knew they were lying if it was them complaining as the dogs haven't been there for four months except when we were present.
I wasn't very polite as I explained it to the neighbours as I was pissed off with it all although 75% of them did say fair play.
I'm 99.9% sure that I know which neighbour it was now.

Years ago, I had the family dog living at my house for a while. He used to bark at the postman. The house was a 90's terraced property. We had a neighbour on one side who complained about him waking her up. I managed to hold my tongue and not reply "try getting a fking job then". The people on the other side never complained about noise, ever. She whinged about multiple things. Then said that she'd already had to move house twice because of noise. Perhaps a modern terraced property wasn't the best of choices then?

Theres a few dogs around here as well, I can hear one now, and heard one (possibly the same one) last night barking/howling away.

What annoys me, is they complain about my friends dogs, but its OK for them to come in pissed at night, shouting, swearing, slamming doors most weeks. But thats a whole different thread!

I'm a dog person & I get it. It's annoying enough when its our dog causing the noise, other peoples are much worse in the annoyance stakes.

Like kids as well really...

Not heard a peep from the dogs today, they've been let out for pisses and sts every hour, or when one of them walks downstairs, let them run around for 20 minutes or so, then back up and just sleeping in the shade, or on the sofa with me.

Going to pick friends daughter up in a bit, so will be interesting to see if anything happens.
