It makes me sad and angry that after a century of automotive development there still isn't a better way of clearing rain from a window than a wipy thing on a stick.
But we do have tat like electric interior mirrors, self opening doors and hybrid cars so effective they are nearly as economical as diesels.

Can you think of a better method though? The only thing I can think of is water repellent coatings on glass, but even these aren't good enough to render wipers obsolete. Swap the wiper motor for a powerful fan like a Dyson airblade hand dryer mounted at the foot of the screen. Not only would it help prevent precipitation landing on the screen, or dry off what was already there, but it would also increase aerodynamic downforce to enable higher cornering speeds.
Sadly the influential Hawks of the pro wiper blade Lobby would no doubt try and kill off any attempt to bring their products into the 21st century.

It doesn't matter how amazing the car is, the wipers still seem like a bit of Victorian technology nailed on just under the window. There should be something better, but somehow there isn't.
Weirdly I'm fine with wheels. Nothing wrong with them at all.
If the wipers are that bad, I find just wiping them with anything works.
I hired a van a few weeks ago and for the first time in ages it started raining a little bit. Despite the van only being about 6 months old, the wipers were next to useless, so much so that I had to park up in a layby as vision was becoming scarily impaired. All I had were a few tissues in my other half's handbag so they had to do. Gave the wipers a wipe with a tissue and they were absolutely fine.
For a longer term solution I'd just get the sponge out but there are probably more professional methods or some valeter's secret trick.

+1 for White Vinegar on a cloth. But when wipers start to smear & screech like that I usually just buy a new set. Note: If you buy replacements from Halfords you can guarantee that the wiper charts are incorrect.

I have no issue spending money on good quality (I generally buy a pair of Denso Hybrid blades for £25 quid which is quite pricey, but they are excellent), but is it really worth spending twice as much as that on blades?
