I'm after a new TV for the new gaff, looking for something around the 40" size. Not interested in 3D, and I can take or leave 'smart' functionality, but I would like something that I can plug an external HDD into and play our existing collection of films and series. Most of these are in .avi and .mp4 format.

We currently have a Samsung Smart TV that doesn't recognise the existing HDD, so we get around it by using an XBox 360 as an intermediary. I'd rather not have to buy a second XBox with the second telly though, so if anyone can suggest something that I can just plug the HDD straight into I'd be very grateful smile

We recently bought a Haier 39tv, reasonably cheap, has two USB inputs and seems to play everything I've thrown at it from my 1TB external HDD.

Just get one of these and plug your HDD into it, then plug into TV.

Plays all formats.

My lg smart tv plays files via usb.

Can put in memory stick or hdd and it plays no problem, if ui is a bit clunky.

My files are mainly mpg and mp4. Quality is suprisingly good for heavily compressed files designed for use on phone when travelling.

It is good isn't it. thumbup

Read about changing the battery in the remote, cant remember the number but it's in the reviews on Amazon.

Use a thicker one as some people have problems..

Yep, spotted that - thanks. It's amazing how my Samsung Smart TV will play some stuff off a flash drive but turns its nose up at an HDD, yet a little £35 box will basically play anything I want it to!

I used to plug an USB stick into the TV but used to get stuttering on some films.

Now have a 2TB HDD plugged into the cyclone and never had a single problem with any format.

pretty much all SMart TV's will do it these days, either from USB or Networked drive
