So, Nikon have done a refresh on their D800 with a few AF tweeks and apparently better video and it's got me thinking!

Any D800 users on here? How much can you crop from the original shot and still keep detail?! My main interest is wildlife, currently use a 5D3 with a 500f4, but the huge filesize of the D8## can't be dismissed and could potentially let me get away with a smaller lens.

So, any samples?

I use the D800 (a lot) and it's pretty astonishing how much you can crop.

Here's an image

..and here's a 100% crop from said image. Taken with live view on a tripod. ISO 100 F8

ETA you don't have to keep the camera in 'silly large res mode' if you want to keep file sizes down. If I'm out snapping, I'll put it into medium res.

Thanks, that's pretty impressive!

If it means I can ditch my 500 for a much more portable 300 2.8 or even 200-400, I'm quite tempted.

I put my 200F2 onto my D800 and get excellent results. The 2x multiplier is very sharp too

Any ideas how the 2x works with the 300 2.8 VR (nearly typed IS there!)

D800 cropped to aps-c is what 16mp or something? Still twice what I had with the 350d, close to what the 1Dx has and more than the 1dmkIV

Plenty of scope to crop if you have quality glass and technique.

I'd be adding a 300 2.8, so quality glass shouldn't be the issue, maybe just technique.

If I can get the same performance after cropping as I do now with my 500 and 5D3 by back will thank me.

5d3 crops are about what 9mp for apcs?

So a lot more pixels, but the difference wont be quite as much as that would suggest.

Question answered. Due to frightening px quotes, I shall be sticking with what I have!

Thanks anyway for the advice.

No, but I'm lazy and shifting my biggun privately would be a pain.

I don't know if it's still the case but when the D800 first came out and the D7000 was Nikon's best aps-c camera ( I know some D300 owners will disagree with that) the D800 was better. It really is two cameras in one.

What's the body constructed of? Is it full magnesium or partial? Weather sealing?

I'm waiting (but not holding my breath anymore) for the D300 replacement D400/D9300 as I have a load of decent DX specific glass but currently wondering if this will be a better bet...

Magnesium http://oneslidephotography.com/canon-5d-mark-iii-v...

With weather sealing.

It's sold as a Pro Body.

I just don't think the D300 is going to be replaced. The D7000 came out with some "pro features" like twin card slots which I think was Nikon's way of trying to placate some owners and then when the D600 came out there's really not much space for a pro spec aps-c camera in the price range.

If they did bring one out people would say for an extra few hundred quid you can buy the D800. The only thing the D800 falls short on was FPS for sports which is clearly what a lot of people use the D300 for.....that's a tiny market though when you think about the people that want a pro body aps-c and wont buy a D800/D7000 because it has the wrong blend of pro features and fps.
