Could have been a disaster !Warning
Discussion
My car was sitting in TVR Centrals car park waiting to be collected .
I turned the key the car started, then i heard a gush ,after quickly turning the engine off there were 6 litres of newish oil all over the floor ,i thought that was it ,scrap engine .
They pushed it in ,got it on the ramp ,the seal on the oil filter was hanging out the side of the filter .
After investigation they found the thermostat nut on the sandwich plate fowling the edge of the oil filter .The oil filter was on an angle ,being forced out one side .
After sanding the aluminum nut back the new filter could be fitted .
They supplied a new filter and 6 litres of semi synthetic S super Mobil oil for £40 and did not charge me for there time .
I`m very lucky ,if it had gone on the motorway the engine would of been scrap .
Warning to anyone running a sandwich plate ,check the stat nut is not touching the oil filter because you may have the same problem .
The only problem now is the oil pressure gauge is reading only around 10 to 30 psi ,before 30 to 60 ,need to have a look .
Forgot to mention i have a new diff with bespoke brackets ,did not notice a difference in rpm and the speedometer actually works ..reading 3 or 4 mph to low after 50 mph .
Think i may of got a away with it ,close one .

Yes the lot ,even the rear bracket is different .
Mine was the first to be done so they did it at a reduced rate ..only cot me £200 more than having the GKN refurbished with some second hand parts ..
I have the old diff ,brackets and new poly bushes if anyone is interested .

No that is from there website.
To have the old diff removed and refurbished (with some second hand parts) and refitted would of cost over £700 ,mine needed a LSD so it would of been stupid money .
mail me i will give tell you the cost .

Who fitted the sandwich plate etc that leaked, Daz?
Me Anthony ,the sandwich plate install is fine ,the problem was the design of the oil filter . The lip caught the stat nut before being tight . The result made the filter skew-whiff then it just decided to let go ,full bore oil all over the floor .
Do you think the Mobil 10/40 Super S semi synthetic will be ok to leave in ..?

So £700 for old GKN refurb, then £200 more . not bad for a new diff Daz. To have the old diff removed and refurbished (with some second hand parts) and refitted would of cost over £700 ,mine needed a LSD so it would of been stupid money .

Daz. Have you any pictures of the oil filter problem?
I really can't make any sense of it.
I've run a sandwich plate for years and can't see how it can go wrong.
A bit more info if you have it please and I will check mine at the next oil change.
There is a stat in the sandwich plate .it fits in by a large nut ,when the oil filter screws in it can hit the nut before sealing .I really can't make any sense of it.

The large nut on the top of the picture hits the oil filter .When you tighten it it in all seems ok .
The rubber seal (part of the oil filter) was hanging out one side caused by the pressure and temperature of the oil .

I found that if the centre nut is tightened really firmly, possibly even threadlock it, you wont have a problem.
If it's not really tight sometimes when you unscrew the filter, you inadvertently loosen the centre nut.
Filter OD's just like the lengths are not all the same Peter If it's not really tight sometimes when you unscrew the filter, you inadvertently loosen the centre nut.

That part was not leaking ,it was the oil filter rubber being pushed out one side . The filter was jammed up against the thermostat nut .If it's not really tight sometimes when you unscrew the filter, you inadvertently loosen the centre nut.

Different size canisters & crimps etc they all have their own ways of construction
I reckon that's what caught Daz out
both listed for Cosworth 4 banger
brand on the right is what I will be using but you can see the differences no matter how subtle Edited by Sardonicus on Friday 27th June 15:47
