Tues and weds night i go to bed about 11pm feeling tired and come 2.30am i am still wide awake. After eventually nodding off i then get up at 5.45 for work leaving me knackered.

Tonight i go to bed about 11pm and asleep by about 11.30 pm however i have been wide awake since 3.30am, tried and tried to go back to sleep but its not happening. Loads of stuff mainly work related going through my head and just can't settle despite trying and trying.

I am sitting here now knowing that today is going to be a long hard day. I work in a high pressure environment where i have to make important decisions all the time and the thought of going to work when i already feel like st is doing my head in.

I try not to drink coffee after about 5pm so it shouldn't be that keeping me awake however i do work shifts and the irregular sleeping patterns will obviously play a part but i am at the end of my tether.

Stress then?

I have just found the solution to my insomnia. I drink 3-4 pints of water a day, one about an hour before I go to bed. I am now sleeping like a baby (wake up in the night screaming lying in a pool of my own pish) and have even started taking naps in the afternoon if given the chance. It's wonderful after many years of not being able to sleep.

I was gonna post a similar thing,

Went martial arts training last night around 8pm this finishes at 9:30 so i'm getting in around 10pm

Didn't get off until gone midnight but then i'm wide awake at 2:30am and didn't get back off until gone 5:30am

7am i'm up for work.

Normally when I go to the gym and push some weights it really relaxes me plus I do this earlier.

If the nature of the exercise or simply the late(ish) time i'm doing it causing me problems?

I feel dead on my feet as i type this but i dont want to give it up as it's giving me fitness I really need.

Cheers.

Its the time you are doing the exercise as the adrenaline will still be pumping through and thats why you cant sleep, I had it the same when doing late night gym work.

Wonder if you could try a calming drink like camomile tea to calm the body down afterwards.

Not bothered what it is really as long as it will help.

Dont want to go down the route as other pals have suggested by 'just have a few beers'

Balls to that.

Sounds like you've been spending too much time on the heath. Step away from the tights and normality should be restored. As long as you don't bump into a Tarrantula, that is.

Always had the same problem when I did kickboxing, sparring was especially hard to get to sleep after.

Camomile Tea will help.

I used to have trouble getting to sleep. I found I was going straight from being active, to trying to sleep. Now I stop whatever I'm doing about half an hour before I want to go to bed. Make a cup of camomile (or other relaxing tea) and watch 30 minutes of crap on the TV with my feet up. Just something to stop the brain racing at 100mph and to allow the body to calm itself down.

First I'd strongly recommend looking into Mindfulness.

Other things you can do is right a list of things that you want to get done at work the next day to get them out of your head and then write a list of things you are thankful for or happy about.

I work shifts ( mix of early/late/nights) and it certainly doesn't help things, though certain mixes or patterns of these are worse than others (for example, doing a late and having to be back in for an early).

I experience what you describe (particularly the early waking at 0300,0400 etc) and always put it down to a bit of anxiety about work or things at home. Sometimes it's a bit of a vicious circle really - you wake too early and know you've got a hard day at work to come (or worse still, that I'm on a night shift and I've got to get through the day and then stay awake all of the next night!) - this just makes you more anxious and less likely to sleep when you need to.

I've never really found a solution, things tend to sort themselves out, I try and make the most of my days off or annual leave, do things I enjoy. It's not always easy though, knowing sooner or later I'll have to go back to work.

Have you tried just water instead of tea? Just wondering if it's the drink or what you're drinking that does the trick.

Sounds like something I experienced recently. GP diagnosed it as anxiety and prescribed some low level anti-depressants which seem to have done the job.

Speak to your GP.

Camomile Tea has naturally calming/realxing effect on peopl, thus you relax and it means that your mind is not racing and neither is your body after the work out.

Whether on not this is BS and its just the warm drink raising your internal body temp and this making you tired is a matter to debate some other time.

I think it works and many people I know have tried it and it works.

So I think its good.

I have found Nytol most helpful.

If I really toss and turn I find a dull podcast on my iPod soporific. Ear buds in and volume down and I am straight off to sleep. Bonus is that I wake up with a deep knowledge of the flora and fauna of Norfolk (insert any dull subject here).

Makes me feel like Joe 90.
