What Car - X5 / XC90 / RX etc - c£8-10k ?
Discussion
Morning all,
Wifes small part time business (wedding design and production) is taking off and we need something of a load lugger but don't want a van, in the ideal world I'd buy a Vito to also use for getting the bike to trackdays but all the stuff in budget seems really ropey !!!
So we are looking at something like the above, not badge snobs, only thing I wont have is a Shogun .... what other options are we missing ?
Mileage - We'll probably do 6-8000 miles a year in it.
Age - We'd prefer something that was pre Mar 06 so its a lower tax band.
It must be an auto, this is non negotiable.
Must be sizeable with seats folded down, will live most its life like that.
So putting this out there, so feel free to make recommendations or ask any questions for info that you think may be relevant, and that doesn't include pics of the wife.
Thanks in advance ...

If it's for lugging around things then I would go down the people carrier route and pick one with easily removable seats. This will give you the largest space and you have the option of putting the seats back in for lugging your family around.
Agree with that. You'd get a nice Ford S-Max/Galaxy for that.

My Wife as an RX400H and loves it, it is the antithesis of the 535D Msport she had before in that it is soft, smooth and wafty
we get 26-28mpg real-world consumption - you have to learn how to drive a hybrid to get the best from it and with care can get to 30mpg
The satnav logic is a bit Japanese in comparison with the usual german fare but no worse accuracy than the BMW one.
Take care with the main dealers, we had a service in October that was £200, but they wanted to do a further £4,000 worth of work! we got £1700 of that done under warranty (steering rack, common issue), £600 was tyres and the rest I haven't done yet (and it went through an MoT with no advisories)
There are a couple of good forums around and some people do their own work on them as ignoring the elctric motive power, it is just a big Toyota
Overall she loves it and will replace it with a 450h next year

Cheers, have to say I am warming to these, and have always liked the shape, dont suppose you have a pic with the rear seats folded down ?we get 26-28mpg real-world consumption - you have to learn how to drive a hybrid to get the best from it and with care can get to 30mpg

Subaru Tribeca is a good option , very well equipped, great build quality and very robust mechanically. Look for an SE7 model, there are a few kicking around at the moment with Subaru LPG kits fitted to ease the fuel consumption. A nice straight 2006 shouldn't cost much more than 7k.
I haven't got any pics, but it is big, the seats not only fold down but also move back and forth, so you can leave them up but reduce the kids' legroom if you need extra load space.
The build quality is good, slightly above the 5 series but not as good as our old 7 series, but it does have all the toys (including power rear door)
I forgot to say that from a PHer point of view, the handling is OK if a little soft, but with 272BHP combined from the 3.3 litre V6 and the two electric motors you can get it to accelerate like a scalextric car if you get it right (makes a lot of noise and fuss due to the CVT gearbox if you get it wrong!)
As an all-rounder it does exactly what we need and you can eat Motorway miles at 95 leptons (22-24mpg at that speed) in near silence, sat in a big comfy leather armchair

If you could get 3 young kids in one I'd have one like a shot.
