Looking at Offshore Health and Safety

Hello everybody.

I've worked offshore for a few years now but mainly in the security role but am looking at shifting sideways to the health and safety role.

I know this was a hot topic a few years ago but has the work fizzled now or is it still hot?

Also realistically what quals do I need and who would they be accredited by etc as I've spoke to a few training providers and they've all given me that their courses are the best and to go with them etc.

Realistically what can I expect to earn?

I've got an open uni engineering degree starting in October but seeing as it will take 6 years to complete and a couple of health and safety courses will actually get me a job I'm wondering if it's worth still cracking on with it or would it prove very useful in the future?

The very least you need is the nebosh general certificate, possibly the oil and gas certificate. Nebosh is nebosh doesn't matter who it's through. Guy I just worked with from bp recommended a company called rrc. Your biggest problem may be lack of using hse offshore. Looking at moving into it myself,with experience of, geotechnical, geophysical , seismic surveying and electronics commissioning I have been exposed to toolbox talks, risk assessments, hot cards, management of change and many similar various things which should stand me in good stead for doing the quals. As for getting a job offshore doing it I am a bit unsure how easy that is myself.

A fair few of the security consultants are moving over to HSE at the moment as the pay is about half as good again. They are going down the NEBOSH route (almost obligatory); higher the better and tailor it to suit where you feel you are able to get in best - i.e. International for working overseas for example - perhaps an easier/shorter route to management level jobs than degree level ed.
