nice route to South Wales?

I'm heading down to the Gower peninsula this weekend (from Scotland). Previous visits I've gone straight down the M74/ M6 to below Birmingham then across to Newport then out to Gower. I want to go down the M6 for most of it to eat up the miles quickly but is there a nicer, reasonably quick route across Wales a bit higher up?

You could try this - lots of scenery, lots of twisties, and not too long (adds about 45 minutes).

If you can spare the time then go to Conwy and take the A470 all the way down the Brecon Beacons - it's a stunning drive.

Thanks for that but it's already a 6+ hours journey,I don't want to add too much more. I might go that way on the return though.

heads of the valley road A465 takes you down to Swansea from the Breacon beacons.

Really heads of the valley road if bloody boring and a lot of it well past ebba valley is packed with road works and speed cameras.
