Three of Japan's biggest carmakers, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota, have added more cars to the recall they issued last year over a defect in passenger airbags.

Honda and Nissan have added 2.8 million vehicles, while Toyota has recalled an additional 650,000 cars.

The latest recalls takes the total number of cars recalled due to the issue to nearly seven million globally.

The affected vehicles have a defective part - supplied by Takata Corp - which "could cause the airbag inflator to rupture and deploy the airbag abnormally in a crash".

Hans Greimel, a Tokyo-based journalist, told the BBC the problem is unlikely to hurt sales of carmakers

My eldest had to take her Yaris into Toyota Blackburn to get the airbag looked at.

She got a courtesy Aygo (which might be replacing the Yaris soon as a result), they valeted the car (HAZCHEM suits would have been needed) and they fixed a very loose number plate free of charge. Top service thumbup

Interesting .. .I've seem some owners / drivers pretty upset over a recall, - they just can't see it as "We've found your car is unsafe and we're going to fix it for free!"

If only the garage would say that at MoT time. wink

Is she fit? No I don't want pics. My mate took his in and it came back dirtier then he left it no courtesy car and generally treated with contempt. biggrin

If only the European manufacturers would be so customer centric as to look after their customers as well as the Japanese do. It's all about culture, the Japs have honour, and as a result care, the European mindset is to look the other way and hope it goes away. Also, the European's tend to call them "service campaigns". One of the highest levels of recalls comes from Merc, Audi and BMW tend to leave you to it, and if you complain under warranty they fix it, if not, tough titties.I admire the Japs for sticking to it and taking the flak.
