French peage & petrol station problems

Just as a warning for others in a similar situation, please be aware that things have changed very recently when travelling in France.

I have had a Caxton FX Euro card for lots of years and have used it across Europe for many things without problems.

Last week, however, we went to France on the bike and had the Caxton card refused or declined at both unmanned petrol stations and on the Peages of Autoroutes several times. Both the peage and the unmanned petrol stations also refused or declined payment by all or any form of VISA or Mastercard on a Sunday evening.

After writing to Caxton, their reply indicated that they did not allow use in unmanned petrol stations because of fraud and that the rest of the the VISA system would follow suit shortly. It seems to have happened, along with Mastercard too if our experience is anything to go by.

Does anyone know how a Telepeage card can be obtained by a non-French national to circumvent this?

French toll cards are run by SANEF I believe.

There is a website in English to obtain one.

Ive got one and use it in france quite often. Worth it just to use the dedicated toll tag lanes

That's news to me. I used my MasterCard at an unmanned station in France only a few weeks ago.
