Carbon Road Bike for c. £1000?

Is the Planet X offering still the best value around? I want the lightest bike for my money.

I went to the showroom a couple of weeks ago and there was some confusion about the price and which bike I was asking about (mind you the assistant wasn't the most enthusiastic salesperson). Even so the frame I saw looked very good.

I just ordered a giant defty 3 composite 2013 model reduced from 1250 to 799, works out at 600 notes after cycle to work.

I paid this for the tiagra version but for 1100 on 105 it's a bargain


I cannot praise this bike highly enough. Firm yet forgiving, great at climbing and descending. Makes you want to ride fast.

1200 with the shimano still available at 999 with the SRAM rival

Bought from Wiggle, and still the same price now, but I think they only sell Eastway for shipping outside the UK which may be a problem. The wheels are really overbuilt and heavy but otherwise it's a great bike for the money with full SRAM Force groupset and OK finishing kit too.

Which is amazing when you consider the mark up and margins on these bikes when new.

How cheap must the "defty" have been to manafacture when it is now being sold for as good as under half the original price? With that in mind how excessive must the price tags be at RRRP?

A friend of mine has the Planet X bike and hasn't had anything bad to say about it. I have the Boardman equivalent and apart from a broken spoke and a replacement BB, which Halfords sorted very promptly, it's been sweet.

I think for that money they are much of a muchness, it would be the geometry that suits you and which colour you think is the prettiest.

I can recommend the Dolan L'Etape. Had mine for nearly 5 months and it's been great. Plenty of flexibility with the spec; I went for SRAM Rival and it came in at £999.99 before the bike2work saving. Seemed like a good spec for the money, and it's nice to have something a little different to the usual big brands.

Just a word about Pauls cycles, A friend was sold a Giant TCR from them(in person not mail order)and couldn't ever get comfortable on it. He went for a bike fit at a proper bike shop and they sold him the wrong size bike. They are
Monkeys of the highest order and would rather make a sale then sell you the right bike.

Just to counter the comments on Pauls. My wife bought a Cannondale Synapse Carbon 105 from them last year. She was not sure whether she needed a 44 or 48, so she went there and tried both. They were very helpful and fitted pedals so she could ride the bikes to see which fitted best. Without trying the bikes we would have probably bought a 48, but after their advice and trying both it was clear that the 44 was the best fit. They also noticed a mark on the paint of one bike so offered a further discount. She ended up buying a £2,000 bike for £1,200 and they threw in free pedals. She absolutely loves the bike and it fits well. I would happily buy from them again, but I would recommend trying any bike for size before buying.

Wow!

I just went through the component list for the DOLAN L'ÉTAPE, and managed to get one 'specced up' to £4,090 !!!!

(although, to be fair, a slightly more sensible groupset and wheels soon had that virtually halved )

The reason i am using them is that i bought my giant trance mtb from them and they were great.

4 months into life with my planet x pro carbon (10 speed rival with Carbon/Alloy wheel upgrade). Paid £1200 all in. First road bike so don't have deep seated point of reference...but i loves it i do!

Weighed on some digi scales with pedals, saddle bag with tube and gas, bottle cages but no water @ 7.88kg.

Finish of the bike was perfect out of the box and a few hundred miles all is very well. Done a couple of 100+ miles and a very happy camper indeed.

PS I am sure that a £3k road bike is different world again. Intentionally avoiding finding out. MTB still first love for 2 wheels.

With the price rise to £1200, I just wondered if that had brought any other manufacturers into the frame, it seemed like an Ultegra groupset and carbon frame (and a nice frame at that) for £1000 was unbeatable.

I'm having the same thoughts, is the SRAM not as good as the Shimano?

The only other that I am considering really is the Ribble, however Planet X is round the corner so I can call in for sizing etc.
