Just finished deleting the junk and now have 2 weeks of a mix of Nikon Nef images and GoPro stills (dealing with video separate)

Now used a nikon before (its GF's) so my plan was post process in NX2 then convert to Jpegs and store on my HD and back ups.

For putting on line for family to see - whats best for free? Picassa??? and will that auto adjust the file size or should I convert to smaller images first?

Flickr is free and resizes for you. You can also set the images to private and select who can see them. Produces good image quality too.

Personally I'd fiddle with them in NX2 then export them from NX2 as Tiff files using no compression and then store them on Flickr. I could be wrong here but it would cut out at least one "lossy" save ( assuming Flickr converts to JPEG when it uploads?) if Flickr doesn't convert to JPEG then your photos will be best as possible and there is massive amount of free storage too so no need to worry about file size.

Stand to be corrected by one of our pros but that's my ne'er standing of it anyway.

You don't really need to backup the jpg files, it's he raw files you should be backing up.

I'd export jpegs to around 1200px on the longer edge and shove hem on Flickr. No need for anything higher than that for people to view online.
