Fire extinguishers

After hearing horror stories about fires, do I need a fire extinguisher in the wedge? If so, what size?

Mmmm, been thinking exactly the same thing since I bought my Wedge in January. Issue is where to mount it that's quick to get at if there's a fire but doesn't look a mess and what if the electrics die - i.e. will the boot solenoid work?

In my Wedge and every TVR I have owned, I always carry a fire extinguisher, a tyre weld repair/ inflator, half gallon water, steel potable two gallon fuel tank, full on a long journey and empty in town, and basic tools.

The fire extinguisher I carry is foam, for oil and fuel, and is a medium size that fits neatly in the center console. (not screwed down).

Admittedly it was tucked behind the passenger seat..I could get to it but think about it..Sit in the car and look at areas that are arms reach..I found two good points..
1. In front of the drivers seat but could get in the way.
2. Rear parcel shelf, Against the boot wall.

Realistically you only want an extinguisher to help get you out of the car if the worst happens or if something you are working on catches fire..Electrical fires should be treated with a lot of caution...And..NEVER try to extinguish a car fire on your own..Call 999...Ziga

Definitely...I have had one in all my TVRs. I have never had cause to use it, but you just never know!

Yup. I'm all for a fire extinguisher, i've one in all my motors. Not just the twedge.
A few years ago, mk1 golf (not mine i was delivering ir for a vag dealer), pull into a services on the m6 for a coffee, back to the motor half an hour later to find it a burnt out wreck surrounded by firemen.
Ive carried an extinguisher ever since.
fires dont just happen in tvr's

I have one of these, secured on the rear parcel shelf upright, between the roof struts.
When the roof is folded, it sits just under the fold. Im looking at fitting a firetrace system at some point, plumbed into the boot and run under the bonnet

Trying to save the car from being totalled is understanding but the main objective is to save life...Cars can be replaced...

I have been meaning to get a fire extinguisher, this thread has reminded me. You need one for the RAF Marham track days apparently.

I have tended to even carry two usually tucked behind the seat.

Bigger the better - that's 2.4l,AFFF and just fits nicely, without any danger of it moving anywhere.

I had a fire extinguisher, hairspray size, tucked behind the driver's seat on the door side. Last year just we had got on to the Eurotunnel to come home I shut the car door and suddenly there was an explosion of white powder! The belt buckle had pierced the extinguisher! Quickly realised it wasn't a fire. Nice to know train were on the scene quickly.
Embarrassing. Other Tiv owners had a good laugh
Next day spent some time cleaning out interior and door pocket
New extinguisher now sits next to central console

It scares the hell out of me, the thought of being caught in a fire. But I must admit I can't imagine what a fire extinguisher would do apart from helping you get out. I don't think I'm brave enough to go close to a burning car with a tank full of extremely explosive liquid.

In didnt think I would be either, but when it happened I was standing 6 inches from the car with a hose desperately trying to keep the flames away from the gasmeter on the outside wall of my house!
It was only when the front tyre exploded within inches of me that I ran out of bravery.

It is always worth securing an extinguisher securely if you do carry one, loose on the rear shelf is a bad idea, it'll turn in to a missile under heavy breaking/impact.

There are lots of different ones on the market ideally one that can be mounted on the base of the drivers seat as that's the closest to you.
I would not drive without one as I have had to use one once and saved a total burn out.
I have them in all cars but have gone a little OTT on the one for the Tuscan I am just finishing its a Halguard Chrome compact which will fit nic on the drivers seat plinth
I don't believe they are available here thanks to some guy in Brussels saying that a fire extinguisher in Europe to have approval has to be RED
But you can order from the US I would like these for the other cars when budget allows.

I have a 2kg one screwed to the floor just in front of the drivers seat. Out of the way but right to hand if you need it.
