Because I'm completely barking I want to design and build a car and offer it as a kit or fully built. The mechanical donor I'm thinking of does not have a chassis, so I would design and build a space frame. So, it probably could not be registered under the name of the donor. Does this mean that a prototype will need to be crash tested and is this mighty expensive? Anyone?

You need to go through the BIVA on each and every vehicle. You can download and read the BIVA from the .gov website

I currently complete about 5 kit cars a year mostly new registrations because I am retired and need no money from what is my hobby. Nor do I make any I do not even break even. Building a complete new car is no small achievement. I recommend you to consider the work involved and make enquiries with any one of a number Universities who offer vehicle construction courses in the UK. I wish you every success but you need accurate, informed, considered, advice on a huge range of aspects of vehicle construction and that seems to me to be the first essential step. The very best of luck to you.
