Well I found my problem..

I now have the main shaft removed from the case and ran out of time this morn to get the rest apart.

Only difference I have found from various on line resources is that due to the size of 5th gear I had to cut off the output shaft bearing cup. In all the guides I have read it slides over the 5th gear. I guess due to the size of 5th gear in a car rather than truck this was not possible, the bearing cup was captured between the casing and 5th preventing removal of output shaft.

This means that 5th gear will have to be pressed on AFTER the output shaft is dropped into the case with the bearing cup already on the shaft. Not sure how much of a pain this will be, might get a machine shop to do this bit (Can you stick a vertical press on its side and use it horizontally...?)

Plan is to order a few upgraded bits from the US unless I can find them over here. I will update when I have this sorted.

Will see how far I get with this, I am enjoying doing something I have not done before! - might chicken out yet...

Might be worth a word with John Read for upgrade info.

And then give him your box of bits if it doesn't go to plan whistle

Very excited!! Now have my John Reid upgraded box & McLoed dual plate clutch and new Yanky flywheel waiting for me in the garage.. Just waiting for the release bearing from TVR Power tomorrow.

Hopefully the 6 month old will wake me up early so I can make a start before work!

I weighed the new flywheel and it it is circa 3Kg lighter than the old one (new one in 10Kg, old one seems to be circa 12.8Kg). Any idea what this will do to performance?

Good chance of my beloved making it as my wedding car on Friday next week smile

You can have your old one machined down for around £50 ,or you need is a decent machine shop . ..If you go to light it can affect your idle . The 5l cars come with a lightened fly wheel as standard .

The twin plate McLoed clutch apparently has a different bolt pattern so a new fly is required.

Mine was goosed anyway. The old paddle had eaten it and the face had blued in patches.

Just wondering what 20+% reduction in flywheel weight will do to performance, tick over and spin up on the turbo motor - guessing worse tick over, but quicker spin up - Not that it needed any improvement!! smile

I don't think idle is compromised on these engines.

The heavy fly was designed for land rovers so they could lope along at low revs.

FWIW my 5.0 has a lightened fly, spins up beautifully and idles nicely (if you like a slightly lumpy idle). The 4 litre engine I had did all of this - I suspect the lightened fly actually helps the 5 litre engine
