Where are all the facelift e39 m5's????
Discussion
A few BMW forums around, of course, but I would go for http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/ . You need to register to see the classifieds.
I would have thought that you'd find something half decent for 8k but you may have to wait. Or pay more. Or compromise.
I didn't pay that much more than that for a car with 63k although it did need a small amount of work. They are old cars now so expect some bills unless you're willing to pay a lot for a car in perfect condition.
Good luck with the search

Having gone through the process within the last month, I found E-bay classifieds to have the best cars... and prices.
Pistonheads classifieds had a few cars as did Autotrader approx 9-10 each most of which were pre-facelift. E-bay classifieds had a wider selection plus the obligatory low milers for £15k+.
The one I found didn't come up on my searches, initially, as I was looking for BMW E39 M5 and E-bay motors didn't see it as it was listed as BMW M5 - I was too specific in the search criteria in using "E39" as well.

Prices are on the rise, I think 8K is now the minimum for a PROPER facelift car with circa 100K miles...I think they will be 10K by this time next year.
Was going to sell my facelift X plate le mans blue 120K car, but just spent 500 quid on new front brakes, tax it tomorrow and keep using it

After a e39 m5 facelift with fsh around 100k miles for 8 grand ish. Is this possible? Been on the hunt a while now and seem most either have part service history or really low miles and are 11 grand plus. Is there a uk forum to search?
I think your budget is realistic but, as others have identified the cars you are after are becoming scarce. I would always aim for one with an intact service history as this will aid it maintaining value into the future - history gaps will never look good at a sale time and the cars good histories are out there. I managed to pick up my individual car for 9k late last year with a bursting history wallet and 70,000 miles on the clock; it was however in need of a fair amount of cosmetic attention; wheels, suffering small amounts of rust in the usual areas, paintwork and leather restoration etc. I have since piled not far off 4k into the car to get things sorted; it's become my new favourite hobby, and I still have a long to do list. Judging by the amount of rust we discovered when my car was in the bodyshop; hidden by underbody covers, be sure to have a thorough inspection underneath any prospective purchases as these cars are starting to rust, this will in my opinion see a fair few start to meet their fate over the next 5 years. A crying shame. My advice would be to either pay 5-7k for a pre-facelift and enjoy piling the cash into it in aid of facelift upgrades, suspension and paintwork etc or fork out up front and pay the 12-15k the top condition examples command. Either way it is fantastic performance car and well worth your investment. Patience would be my final piece of advice, the right cars are out there, be choosy and allow 6-12 months of searching for exactly what you want. Then get on and drive it, it's what they are made for!Gruber said:
That's beautiful. Did you buy it from GSM? I think it's the car I called up about but you'd pipped me to it.
Would you recommend GSM?
Thanks Gruber Would you recommend GSM?

I did indeed, it's the first time in a long time that I've purchased from a dealer rather than buying privately. I was so fed up of looking at crap cars claiming to be immaculate!
The whole experience with GMS was pleasant and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another car from him, he's a real enthusiast. He often has other M5s that are not advertised too so it's worth asking what he has and what is coming up in the pipeline.
If you want to know anything else, drop me message via my profile.

I have one that I am just about to put up for sale. It's a facelift with lots of nice options. Full history. Fair bit of work done during my 4 year ownership. Not mint, and needs a few bits here and there to make it really nice. But it's sound. 134k. Please do send me a PM if you are interested.

Ah! I was torn between your M5 that was up at GMS cars when I was looking a few weeks ago, and the Imola E46 M3 I ended up with. I was just thinking about [what is now] your car earlier today, and bugger me, here it is.

I very nearly ended up going the other way... do love my E46 though.
How are you getting on with the M5?

The M5 is an awesome all rounder, the ride is much more compliant than the M3 CS or the Z4M, out of all 3, the M5 is the winner for me with the M3 CS coming a close second. My only complaint with the M5 is the standard exhaust, it's just needs a smidge more volume I very nearly ended up going the other way... do love my E46 though.
