Whats the worst first car?

Hi folks few weeks ago I asked whats the best first car to get, not really got an answer as such, as the seems to be a few good first cars, so what would be the worst smallish under a £1000 car for a 17 year old learning to drive and once passed test. Any ideas and opinions much appreciated

fortunately most of the really bad ones (metro, early fiesta etc) are very uncommon

On the flip side it promotes a sense of self-preservation!

To many youngsters get into their 5-star NCAP car and drive like they're immortal.

Back on topic... a '52 plate Ford Fusion. It's not as good as a Fiesta, not as cool, and handles worse!

Why is it whenever I see one of these I imagine that at some point in their lives they will end up on the wrong side of the road.

Funny you should mention the micra as a when I asked whats the best first car to get a few people said micras, and I am thinking of a matiz but they are a bit small, not really that bothered about it being really cool, just want something reliable and cheap to buy, insure,etc.

There is "bad" as in "seriously uncool" - Cars in this category are bad to be seen in, but are otherwise fine.

There is "bad" as in "this car is st" - Cars in this category will make your life a misery, and possibly kill you.

Which do you mean?

EDIT: Just dipped into a tiny bit of research and it appears the Tata Nano never made it to these shores officially.

There shouldn't really be any bad cars nowadays. Maybe back in the 60s or 70s or even 80s there were cars that had bad faults (Austin Metro I'm looking at you!) but not these days.

Not my first car but I had the err... pleasure... of owning a Daewoo Matiz for a couple of years. It was surprisingly ok if it was just you in the car, with 4 people (5 at a push) then it did struggle a bit.

Bigger than it looks on the inside, I gave a mate a lift home after he bought a 50" TV on impulse from Comet - it fit in the Matiz perfectly (minus all packaging), the guy at Comet couldn't believe it!

Tyres from our local garage were £10 as they were a weird size and they 'had them taking up space'. Everything else was cheap until it got about 2 years old, then stuff went wrong including the petrol tank needing replacing - expensive. Got rid shortly after, but before that point it was cheap and cheerful.

Oh, I took off the 'Dae' bit of the badge to turn it into a truly magnificent "woo Matiz".

Surely any car is good as a first car? I'd rather have the Nippa above or any other apparently 'uncool' car than no car at all.

I think that for a 17 year old any car is good as long as it works.

However what about a Lancia Dedra?

Its just Im spending close to 3 grand of my own money (if you count the insurance cost) so I want to make sure I get a good car, its took me a lot of time and hard work to get the money so dont want to pour it down the drain buying a piece of s##t

I wish this were true, but I feel cheated out of what should have been great first car memories. Mine was a horrific car, unreliable, unsafe, a total disaster. I remember it badly.

I had an early 90's 900cc Fiat Panda.

It was a slow, dangerous, moderately reliable, terribly build, agricultural st heap....

...but it was my st heap and that was all that mattered.

Cerbera with a Supercharged LS Conversion on Linglong tyres would be a bad choice.
