Urgent 944 Gearbox Advice Required
Discussion
Hi all,
944 S2 in for a service and I have been told that the gearbox is knackered and very noisy.
This concerns me as the car is very quiet and has been looked at by a couple of specialists who have commented that the gearbox doesn't whine like most.
They are suggesting replacement and I am seeing the car tomorrow for them to show me. Can anyone suggest what a knackered gearbox sounds like? Apparantly the g/box bearings are breaking up.
My friend who owns a Jag has commented that the 944 is even quieter than his car!
Please help if you have any experience with this issue.
Many thanks
Simon

gearbox wear commonly manifests as whine, increasingly loud as the wear progresses, and usually worse in gears 1-3 as they get used most. Sounds a bit odd if your car has always been quiet. And if somehtings gone phut then it presumably wont work at all. IS your garage a porsche specialist, have you used them before and have you been impressed enough to stay with them. If so, fine. If not look for 2nd opinion

Yes they are a specialist but not used them before. Went to see the car today and there is a noise when in neutral that is like a rattling which stops as soon as the clutch is depressed. Apparantley there is slack in the drive chain.
They also reckon the ball joints are worn and quoted £434 + VAT each side and 3hrs labour!
For now they are going to replace the Cam tensioners, which they have shown me make a noise and whilst they are doing that, they will be doing the balance and cam belt.
To service the car, change the brake fluid and do the above will be £835 ish!
Still the gearbox and ball joints to go.......
If I go ahead with a gearbox I will hunt for an s2 box with the LSD option so at least I would be upgrading!
Any thoughts would be welcomed
Cheers

I have had a similar noise on previous cars and it was the clutch release bearing chatering - disapears when the clutch pedal depressed or revs increased.
This normally isn't a major problem and the bearing is normally changed when the clutch requires renewing - part of a clutch kit.
I would seek a second opinion if I were you as others have recommended.

This is normal for 944's, it's the idler gear. Both of mine do it and every other that I've been in do it to lesser or greater degree. Do get a second opinion just in case.
Drive chain slack they are having a laugh
BTW gear oil should be changed every 4 years or 48k miles

Sounds like these guys should be wearing masks.......(ala Dick Turpin) I've just looked back through my service records & Hartec supplied & fitted an Exchange off side front wishbone (Including new ball joint) for £200+Vat. Admittedly that was a bit cheaper becaus it was done at the same time as some other work BUT from what your saying they want to charge you "£434 + VAT each side and 3hrs labour!" do you know what there Hr'ly charge is ???

Balljoints/wishbones
I wrote this after contacting various suppliers

WRT the gearbox I.m with Paul et al, it's fairly normal and get someone else to have a look

So where is it you are getting this opinion?
I would take the car to another garage and get all the work done there, they are having a laugh with those prices.
My '90 S2 has transmission "rolling" noises that disappear when the clutch is released, but they are due to the torque tube bearings having run out of grease, especially the GB side one which is the one suffering the most on our cars.
The rolling noise intensifies up to 3000 rpm then it completely disappears above, either in neutral (clutch engaged) or in gear.
I have a beautiful spare torque tube gently waiting for new bearings at the mo'.
By the way, had a chat the other day with an old mechanic from local OPC who told me they had many replacement S2 torque tubes for the 1990 model year. The original bearings used were not adapted, I heard.
