Skoda Octavia vRS 280 coming?

Rumours of a 40th anniversary (v)RS special strengthen with new spy shots

Play hot hatch mix and match with the VW Group's 2.0-litre EA888 turbo and MQB platform and there are a huge amount of possibilities. Between Audi S3, Golf GTI and Leon Cupra, there's a danger the Octavia vRS could go unnoticed. Some may say that's part of the appeal of course, but Skoda is keen to draw some attention back to its sporting flagship.

Fewer exhausts please
Fewer exhausts please
This year marks 40 years of the Skoda RS moniker. What? Yes, it did extend back beyond the first Octavia RS of the early 2000s, with the first hot Skoda the 130 RS. Now they are vRS following that little disagreement with Ford but Skoda wants to continue the lineage through. And if it means a 280hp Octavia wagon we won't argue about a letter!

At least that's what's rumoured about this latest prototype, seen with Audi RS3 wheels, four exhausts and red calipers. Take the VAQ 'diff' from the Performance GTI and Cupra as well then, voila, one very rapid family car. And police vehicle, no doubt.

Or could Skoda go one step further and use the Golf R drivetrain? There may be a Golf R estate already but does that mean VW wouldn't want Skoda impinging on its quick estate territory? The final option is that it gets the GTI Performance diff and bigger brakes but little extra power. We hope not.

Did someone say traffic car?
Did someone say traffic car?
Many possibilities then, but with little confirmed as yet. Here we were going to mention that with a slightly used secondhand car and some light aftermarket tweakery you could have a 250hp+ Octavia vRS estate already. But there are no petrol cars for sale on PH yet. Doh.

Given a 40th anniversary for Skoda won't come around every year, we would expect to hear something official of a special vRS Octavia very soon.

A fine one car solution. If it's has the Golf R drivetrain it'll be bloody fast. The R and Audi S3 are fine things. MQB has been impressive thus far. I wonder how VW can make MQB cheap enough for cars this size and good enough for cars two or three sizes up?

The problem will be you'll no doubt get no change from 30-32k and despite its competence it will still be a Skoda and that'll damage sales, its just too much for a sub brand.

the Vrs is already a good car but not that many sell, seeing as its completely VAG built now there can only be one reason for this.

That said, the police are going to be over the moon.

unless I misread the above or fell asleep in a time capsule it is 2014

2014 - 2000 = 14 not 40

or is there another vrs or RS from the 1970s ?

Wonder if they will be dropping the new 2 ltr twin turbo diesel in from the new Passat. A 240bhp 4wd Diesel Estate Octavia would get my vote over the new Passat version.

Not many vRS's sell!!!! Pop over to Briskoda site and see the tales of long waiting lists etc.

We had to wait 12 weeks for ours, it was ordered just after they launched it. By the time we collected it they were quoting 20 weeks plus for delivery on new orders.

What's this obsession with exhausts? The Skoda has too many, the Aston's ("Spotted") are too small: does it really matter? What is the correct number / size of exhaust?

On the way to Brands Hatch on Sunday I saw an 11-year old (53 plate) Octavia vRS Estate still on active Police service; guess that shows the high regard in which these are held by the Force.

Why do you like the Skodas so much? (genuine question). I notice a good few of the BiB here in Bangor Northern Ireland driving A6 Avants.

Because some feel manufacturers are using them more as marketing gimmics rather than genuine need. In this case, you have a four cylinder 'requiring' four outlets. It's been written about and discussed at length here -

Not a new thing, I remember some being annoyed back in the late 80s because one of the twin pipes on the Cavalier GSI was a fake.
