found this after my MOT

The guy was in something of a rush so didn't get a chance to talk through the advisories, but nothing was on there for tyres at all

yet he'd marked it up in yellow so clearly found it, but didn't fail it or even advisory it, i'm not sure he forgot or if it's not an actual concern.

It looks to me like the end of a piece of cord popping out, but that would be an mot fail, so i wonder if it's a nail which has been worn flat on the bit which goes near the road, i live on a new build site which is a pain for nails being left everywhere.

the tread is quite low, down to nearly 2mm so i was planning to change them next month, do i risk trying to pull it out or just get it changed?

Thats a nail. i'd change it.

He must have forgotten to put in the advisories, should be mentioned somewhere.

It's not worth mucking about with a damaged tyre, so change it. BTW, why is this in S,P&L? Did you mean to ask "what are the legal consequences of having a nail in a tyre"?

Perfect place for a repair. Depending on how much tread is left on the whole tyre as to wether it's worth it.

not really worth repairing, the tyre is due for a change, usually i pull out nails and if it stays up then i don't worry about it, if it goes flat then replace or get repaired , but this car has no spare tyre

I'd agree if it were near the shoulders, and certainly any tyre with sidewall damage is unserviceable - but the position of that nail, right in the middle of the tread, makes it a very good candidate for a perfectly safe repair.

However, given the amount of tread remaining, it's debatable whether it's worth saving in this instance.

I've only ever had one tyre repaired but I never felt really comfortable driving on it. In any case, the repair wasn't 100% effective, it lost a few psi in the next five years.

A case for a full refund and letter of apology if ever I've heard one wink

I'd repair that for a few quid, run it a couple more months and change both then. Perfect place for a repair.

If it were winter, I'd change it now but as it is I'd have no issues repairing and running a but longer.

Apart from the first sentence, which is completely incorrect, this is the answer. It won't be worth the cost of repairing and rebalancing for the remaining life

Well, the bit about sidewall damage is correct; the bit about if it were close to the shoulder is also correct, because I wouldn't feel comfortable repairing it; and the bit about the position of this nail being perfect for a repair is also correct.

ETA: Unless I've misinterpreted you and it was BV's first sentence you were referring to? In which case, I wouldn't say "completely incorrect"; it's just a little over-cautious in my view.

pulled it out, it was a nail
clearly didn't go all the way through as it's held up perfectly
