How long should a set of tyres last? I realise different cars driven in different ways will have different life cycles, but what's the average?

After 15 years of company cars then several years of swapping cars every few months I have very little experience of how long a brand new set of premium tyres should last. I'm now investigating taking a lease and whilst 3 yr leases have lower lease costs, I'm thinking a 2yr lease might be cheaper as I may be able to get away with not changing the tyres. I'm looking at 10,000 miles a year and at things like A6, 5 series, E class, although the Golf R is also looking tempting, but would no doubt have a much shorter tyre life.

It depends on:

- Tyre type
- Tyre brand
- Tyre size
- Car drive
- Driving type
- Driving style

In short, on tyrereviews I see between 5,000 and 50,000 miles returned as the "norm".

20K front and 10K rear, for a rear wheel drive car won't be far out ?

Varies massively depending on the tyres in question, the car they're on and the driving style used. Michelin seem to offer the best wear life by some margin which more than compensates for the price. I got 30000 hard miles out of a set of Pilot Sport 3s on my old Clio 182 and they still had life in them.

For a normal car doing normal driving any less than 15k would disappoint me, 30k would be a good result. I would say 20k was a decent mileage to expect. The rear tyres on shopping hatchbacks can often die of old age rather than mileage.

on a related subject, I've just tried to help a colleague in our works carpark with a flat tyre.

the side wall was so perished, it had blown through.

tyre missed balanced, so one side totally bald.

added to this she tells me its just had two new front tyres for its recent MOT, done apparently by her son in law.

however she has no locking bolt to get the wheel off, so currently she is going nowhere.

I expect 20-25k (Michelin & Bridgestone) out of a set of fronts and more on the back. The Goodyear F1s that were on the back of my Saab were replaced at 60k

Current daily has missmatched rear tyres and I recon there is 5k left in those, so I shall replace with matching when they are on the limiters. I'll replace with Khumos and I'll be interested to see how long they last...

A "normal" car driven gently on "normal" tyres should probably give 20k+ miles.

Once you start driving hard, running funny geometry setups and using super-soft tyres, there really is no minimum. I've seen a set of "road tyres" dead in under 100 miles with heavy track use.
