Yesterday I was in the works helicopter going between sites.

My question is this.

We changed the order of visits, as we walked up to the helicopter at the first site, but seemed just to take off straight away.

I thought flight plans had to be filed in advance, so what happens when routes are changed, like yesterday.

Didnt have time to ask the pilots.

Depends......if it was visual flight rules (VFR) then they may not have filed a flight plan at all, even if they did, it would be an easy enough thing to change when speaking to ATC over the radio or even on the dog and bone before lifting. Even an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight would be relatively easy enough to change.

Depends what you're doing and where really. You can file a CHG (change) message on a flight plan to make alterations. You can also DLA (delay), CNL (cancel) and various other things. However, to do this you need something that's connected to the AFTN (Aeronautical Fixed Telephone Network). If your aircraft operator has an operations department, the crew may have just called them, or they may have just informed ATC while airborne as the previous reply said.

I very much doubt that any flight plan was filed. You don't need it for that sort of flying. You can if you want, but I wouldn't bother.

As above its unlikely they even filled a flight plan.

But a quick call to operations would get a change message submitted. Or alternatively I have an app on my phone that I can now file flight plans from so could be done that way.

We have 10 sites across the Uk, mostly in the Midlands.

They are manufacturing sites.

Choppers (I tthink we have 5 or 6 now) are used in the main for customers who we are trying to sell too, the exec for meetings and the boss to get to and from home in Gloucester area.

We also have 2 Gulfstreams, again to fly customers to thefactory, but also used alot for flying staff to our plants around the world (USA, China, India Brazil)

In total we have 5 fixed wing pilots and 6 chopper pilots full time employed.

by the way, I am not on the Board!!! just a lowly employee going to anotehr site hitching a lift.

^ Almost certainly by the sounds of it.

As others have said, they wouldn't have to file a flight plan for the type of flying it sounds like they're doing. They might do anyway, but it would be more to provide some sort of alerting action if they failed to show at the destination (i.e. an airport) than anything else, so changes in route should make no difference. There are rules for when it is mandatory to file a flight plan, but none of these would be likely to apply.
