Having recently spent the day wafting down to Goodwood FOS in a rather nice Bentley, my interest has been resurrected in refined power and comfort. I do however have an unreasonable addiction to motors from times gone by, I'm not talking 60's or 70's here, I'm talking early 90's and more specifically the Mercedes W124 models.
I'm not particularly well informed on the subject but the shape of the 500e hits all my buttons whilst the interior is, in my mind, absolute perfection. The worth of said vehicle seems to be spiralling skywards and out of reach, so are those of you more well informed able to point me in the direction of another motorway masher with similar looks and interior? I've unsuccessfully hunted about on the net and cannot locate a matching interior to that of the 500e in something more financially appealing but I'm hoping that there are models that I can keep a look out for that are currently not for sale?

Decent early Mercs prices are now truly daft. Much like the equivalent early BMW M models, or any other yesterdays old unwanted heaps now magically entering made up price classic status. The good news is Merc still make great wafting machines. So if you are not scared of anything straying away from right angles grab the next generation, before the dreaded classic status arrives to bump up the prices on those.

W140s don't look the same at all! The W124 is as wide as a golf.E39s are all at the age where there's an electronics issue around the corner, and they are not cheap to fix - I have had 3 friends who have scrapped/sold their E39 due to expensive and untraceable faults.
The W124 doesn't have these faults purely because it is far less complicated car. The W124 rusts (in known rusts spots) and if you avoid the later engines is pretty bombproof.
I'd trust a random W124 miles more than a random E39/E65 etc!

Every E39 has an electrical problem waiting? Sorry, but what rubbish. I've got several friends or acquaintances with E39s which are absolutely fine. Also, you assume they're all really expensive to fix? I had an electrical fault on my E65......including a new part, diagnosis and labour it cost £52 (Inc VAT). My E38 (very similar to an E39) had not a single electrical fault and I don't think I spent anywhere as much as you are currently about to on your W124 (and have spent so far). Regards reliability, it was also amazingly reliable, never once broke down.
Loads of W124s have been scrapped for rust or a rather big electrical issue as well.

(My Coupe has 136K.)
The only thing I would say to the OP is that don't get caught in the trap of thinking they are cheap cars to have if you want it "nice".
