2nd Year AUC warranty £1000, really?
Discussion
I tried to buy a BMW M car today from a main dealer, the only thing I asked for was for a 2nd year warranty to be included.
I was told this would cost £1000 but having searched these forums I thought it only cost the dealer £500 and most were happy to include it.
Needless to say I didn't buy the car, but it would be nice to know for future reference.

I'm pretty sure its £1050, when I was recently negotiating on a car the dealer actually showed me the Mondial price list as they'd only go 50/50 on the cost with me.
I certainly wouldn't run an E60/1/3 without one, five weeks into my second stint of e60/1 M5 ownership I got landed with a bill for £2700 due to a failed DSC module. The warranty on my previous M5 probably covered three times that amount over the four years that I owned it.

You can vary the terms of the warranty to alter the cost. eg you can choose from £0 - £250 excess, which if you go for the high excess drops the premium considerably.
I took the highest excess, and IIRC my premium was about £600 per year for an e92 m3, as I was only interested in really having the warranty to cover big ticket items, not the small stuff.
You can also choose different levels of cover, from fully comp, to named component, to driveline only, and this will further reduce the cost of the premium, however I felt that dropping the level of cover was too risky from the point of view of arguing the toss as to whether something was covered or not, too much small print for my liking.

I'm not sure about E46 or older cars but for E92 you should at least get 1 year AUC warranty. This is almost as good as the new warranty where most of the expensive bits are covered. I'd push for 2 years AUC to be honest as you'll really need it unless you plan to sell after 1 year.
My car also cames with remainder of the 5 year service pack (2+years left) so I get servicing FOC too.
After the 1 or 2 years AUC warranty expires if you still decide to keep car try Mondial warranty or shop around for other options - I'd definitely recommend a warranty as when things go wrong it can be VERY expensive (unless you have a good mechanic friend or are very capable of fixing cars yourself).

Another thing, this one car had gone 4 years (9000 miles) without a service, does this sound normal? It's at a BMW main dealer...
Err, no. Should have had oil services every 2 years even if the annual mileage is very low.My comment is based on a purchase I almost made in March, I also considered an X5 with the same dealer and the second years' warranty was £750ish iirc.
In the end I bought from a non-BMW dealer and got a three month Car Care Plan warranty which has covered in full the DSC issue. I'm just about to re-instate a BMW warranty and there is no £0 excess option anymore, just £100 or £250.

I've just had exactly the same problem sorted under warranty (3rd party) on my e61 M5. Both the dealer and I fought with the warranty co. As they wanted to "refurb" the unit and refit.I certainly wouldn't run an E60/1/3 without one, five weeks into my second stint of e60/1 M5 ownership I got landed with a bill for £2700 due to a failed DSC module. Have just taken out mondial warranty - paying monthly is just over £100 a month, with a £100 excess on each claim. Worth the piece of mind, and not getting the stare from hwmbo when a repair bill comes in........

9000 miles in 4 years... as poster above unless the car is strict garage queen definitely still need a service.
The car has just been serviced, but the last service was over 4 years ago. I thought it was condition based servicing so the length or time didn't matter. At one point the owner did 4000 miles in just over 3.5 years, bit weird really. Eitherway I think the dealer is lying to me so I will take my business elsewhere.

eta,
It should have had brake fluid changed at some time in that 4 year period too.

It does matter, as a oil service will come up 2 years after it has been reset. The car has been under serviced and the counter just reset.

So the maximum service interval regardless of mileage is 2 years, thanks for confirming.eta,

How do BMW have the cheek to sell it as an AUC car if its own history would void their own warranty...

Boils my blood when they do this, you try px'in a BMW that had not been serviced for 4 years, it would only be worth 50p in there eyes as the schedule had not been adhered too.I bet they got this M3 cheap because of this very reason, if you do like the car and they will put a warranty on it, then bid them hard on it, and leave it at that, explain that dealers are not fools and would have paid nothing like the px value as it had not been serviced for 4 years.
