Either I am missing something - or you haven't thought this one through.
If the area under the power curve and torque curve is the same.... what difference are you expecting to see?
I'm thinking lowest centre of gravity or narrowness (as in inline) meaning less frontal areaIf the area under the power curve and torque curve is the same.... what difference are you expecting to see?
Or would a wankel engine be in theory the best for this?

If they all have the same power then the lightest!
this, but a flat engine (boxster) has the advantage of low c of g. http://youtu.be/6dFzgsq49R8

Assuming identical power outputs for all engine configurations - ignore fuel type - which is the best ?
Best as in to achieve the fastest lap?
I6
V6
v8
V10
V12
Boxter
Stupid question is stupid.Best as in to achieve the fastest lap?
I6
V6
v8
V10
V12

t, I'm being really condescending on this thread.

H16 probably if you can get reliability. I do not think anyone has as yet.

Foursquare engine of four sets of diagonally arranged pistons totaling 16 swept bores arranged in an opposed pattern reminiscent of a H with the crank in the centre. BRM built one but reliability was poor. Very very free revving powerful engine certainly the best theoretically. Outstanding dynamic balance and very short engine. Holy grail of engines IMO.
It reminds me more of an X than an H.With my limited knowledge, I think I'd need more information...
What size engine? For example I get the feeling if we were talking sub 3 litre, an i6 would win (have it in my head that c500cc is optimal cylinder size, not sure where from).
If we were talking 6 litres, I think something like a v12 would be better. Can't imagine as few as 6 cylinders being optimal for an engine of that displacement.
Happy to be corrected by somebody smart if this is wrong

Two cranks though, rather than one shared.
Beautiful engine, amazing sound. I notice that the cranks spin in the same direction, would counter-rotating cranks not balance the engine better (i.e. no torque on the engine mounts)? Does the rotation even have an effect, or am I worrying about nothing?
