Average PHer + which car = fastest lap?
Discussion
I was just wondering the other day...
Take the average PHer. i.e. Someone keen on driving and who regularly drives a reasonably fast car on the road with occasional track days.
You have to chose a car that will get this guy around a track in the fastest possible time.
What car do you give them for the task?

Indeed. Stuff like the Radical... they've got teeth. Most people would feel threatened or intimidated by them as they are so far removed from the MX-5 / 535d they drive every day.
Have you been looking in my garage
Anyway, a quote from the Radical website.
"The SR3 RS is a sure-footed, highly-developed racer, adept and rapid in the hands of both the novice trackday driver, and seasoned racing professional".

I was just poking fun at the usual PH stereotypes.
Thanks for the quote, nice to know that it's from an impartial and unbiased source...

I'll take a current F1 car.
I reckon that a reasonable percentage of our membership wouldn't be able to get in, and of those who could a reasonable percentage probably wouldn't make it through the first corner without doing something silly. That's bad for our lap time average!mwstewart said:
I take it you mean a road car? Zonda R for me.
If not I'll take a current F1 car.
Only if you are a pro driver. (You may well be, but I was talking about an average PHer)If not I'll take a current F1 car.
My impression is that the average PHer probably wouldn't be able to get a F1 car out of the pits without stalling, let alone get the tyres up to temperature enough to out a good lap time in.
To a lesser extent, take a PHer that is used to driving a hot hatch, I don't think they would get a TVR Cerbera around a track as fast as their GTi because they would either 1) keep spinning it when they realise how much they rely on their stability control, or 2) be too scared to fling it into the corners and drive like miss daisy.
Am I wrong on this? Is it faster car = faster lap?

I did think about that, but decided that even if being ham fisted the sheer speed of the thing would make up for it

I have never been a 10/10ths driver, nowhere near enough talent with too much mechanical sympathy and a fear of big bills, but I felt most confident driving my Westfields faster than any other cars I have owned, so I would say something like an R500.
Put an average PHer in one, though, and they'll be a mess of crossed arms with understeer, oversteer, the works. You'd need to be reasonably handy to beat something like a GTR, even one with a fairly rubbish driver in it.This is coming from someone who just sold a Caterham race car after nearly five years of ownership, and doesn't like the GTR!

I subscribe to your school of thought, hence my suggestion of massively powerful but hugely computer assisted GTR, blessed with physics defying levels of grip and traction but also untreatening, almost 'normal car'-like design and controls. BritishRacinGrin said:

Edited to add I have never driven a GTR, I hate to think how much trouble I could get into driving one of them at full pelt.

Very true.I suggest the car needs to have, in order of importance
Familiar layout of controls to their normal car
Lots of electronic safety controls to give confidence at speed
POWERRR
4WD to inspire confidence
As lightweight as possible
Take any of the top 3 away, and the lap times will go down the pan.
