987 drive belt

After spending 4 hours sitting around in the middle of the night (thanks to Porsche st-sistance), I am told that the drive belt in my 987 has gone. At 20k miles and two weeks after a major service, this seems pretty bloody crap to me.

Anyone had any experience of this? I'm pretty sure someone fked something up at the service, given that the car has also generally run badly since the service.

Update is that Porsche might think about fixing it on Tuesday but are busy until then. I think I've already, after a year, had enough of Porsche dealerships and am going to either sell the car or go to an independent. It's a 30 minute job!

But always seems worst at the time and later on, you will hardly remember (if like me, that is)

I know, which is probably why people usually end up sticking around despite the level of service. I can't imagine any other company not lifting a finger to fix something that they should have stopped going wrong.

I'm going to spend an hour or so at Porsche West London telling them how st they are.

I live just down the river from them but bought my current 987 from OPC Hatfield.
Was a good experience and had the car serviced there while I waited on Sat morning. Not too far to drive, but I got to know every car in their large showroom.

I bought mine in Hatfield, too, and will probably start getting it serviced their too after this nonsense.

When you think that a bit of fiddling about and replacing oil costs about £1200 once they add all the little bits and bobs, it's a fxking disgrace that they have literally no pride in their work and haven't even come close to apologising for the car giving up so soon after a major service (and because of an item that, if worn or faulty, should have been replaced. I doubt they even took off the front engine cover to check the drive belt.

Yep, I bought three Boxsters from West London but was never convinced by their service dept, seemed too small for the volume of sales.
Also, Chiswick is an easy market for them with lots of 'celebs', so proles like us don't get the extra level of service.

You could also go out to Reading, not so far.

Hi Ord make sure they inspect the waterpump pulley has not detached from shaft causing belt to come of.I have customers that have not changed belt upto 7 years old, so very rare to break at that mileage

Thanks, Chris. I agree. They flagged up that the belt was "worn" during the service (20k miles) a couple of weeks ago and I said "Really? There must be something else wrong, then", which they said they would look into.

It seems they just replaced the belt without sorting out whatever was really wrong.

Yep. Something was wrong with the [insert technical word here that I think meant the tensioner pulley]so that the belt had worn and then snapped.

I think they lied when they said they replaced the belt at the service, to be honest, and that it just broke. It must have been taking a beating from the fact that its alignment was off.

Good excuse for an underdrive crank/PAS pulley and a shorter replacement belt.

Yeah.. about as good an excuse to cut off one's arm because of paper cut on a finger.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. Some people do like the odd modification here and there
