60mpg motorway car max £11k or £15k new

I posted this in a different thread on the back of another question so thought I'd start afresh.
I'm looking for an economical mile muncher and second hand can spend £11k or new if I lease £15k. Basically under £200 per month payments.
I'm doing 20k per year and want something comfortable. My fear is that I'm going to end up with something bland.
The only car that I feel I could live with would be a Clio dci new. 70 mpg on the motorway real world.
I have a 205 gti 16v as a toy, so am happy with something flat and comfortable.

So criteria is good on fuel, comfy, quiet with a good stereo.

Any recommendations?

Mrs Saleen has an 11 plate DS3 e-HDi, she commutes 70miles a day (mostly A303) and gets 63mpg from it, it is very comfortable and has a very good stereo, single cd but it plays both CDR and MP3 CD's, also has an aux socket but they do come with a iphone/ipod compatible socket, £0 road tax is also a bonus!

Do you know what mpg it gets at 70 mph and how quiet is it?

That mpg is at 70mph and it is very quiet, the only annoying thing about the car is driving with the windows open as the wind noise is noticable, but the car has climate control so not really a problem.

I'm getting 66mpg brim to brim over the last 20,000 miles in my 2012 mk6 golf 1.6 TDI S.

My commute is a 90 mile round trip, A roads and 20 or so miles of motorway.



Generally speaking, larger cars tend to be more comfortable on long runs that small hatchbacks.

Thanks for posting that. Can I ask what your average cruise speed on the motorway is?

Probably around 60-65mph. If i up that to around 70mph i can get around 60mpg overall. Also, these are "actuals" taken brim to brim - most trip computers read 5-10% inaccurate, so on the dashs you'd be seeing an average of 63-66mpg over the course of a tank if you were averaging 70mph on the motorway. I normally see around 70mpg on the trip computer over the course of a fill of fuel, which translates to around 66mpg.

I think I'd go with a Golf 1.6TDI based on the figures above. Superminis may have 1.3/1.4 TDI engines but you won't save that much in fuel and they won't be as quiet on a motorway just buy whatever 1.6 TDI car takes your fancy that's a hatchback.

Yeah that's what I originally thought but apparently stuff like the Clio isn't really that small, and apparently it's really quiet on the motorway.
My wife's Fiesta is really refined and quiet - I'm very tempted to just buy another econetic.
