Right,

I've been tasked with assisting in the extracting or flogging of a rather elderly, rather dusty Range Rover Classic that a friend's elderly father tucked away in his garage 10 years ago and hasn't moved since.

From what i gather / can remember, it's a V8 in that wine red colour, it's complete and has many new (well, new a decade ago) parts including a stainless exhaust, aluminimum tailgate (?) and some other oily bits. It's complete, it will start and it will drive but I'd be wary given it hasn't done so since jesus was a lad. There's no rot, just a bit laquer peel on the bonnet.

I'll need to find out more / get some images however thinking ahead and knowing generally bugger all about these and the current market, any suggestions as to who may be interested in taking the car and saving the usual ebay / Gumtree hassle and grief as it needs to be a quick, painelss disposal for sentimental reasons and to save it falling into the hands of a off roader as I do think it's genuinely far too nice for that.

The car is located in Central Scotland - I've Googled some specialists hoped somebody may have some thoughts on the matter? And yes I know pictures would help, I'll endeavour to get some over the next couple of days.

Thanks in advance

yes a lot more info is required

if you're calling it a Classic then it's possibly not that elderly in Range Rover terms which could make it less desirable and in a crowded market

ever heard the term "no good deed goes unpunished" unless you really have to or want to I'd leave all this to your friend's family to deal with as generally you'll get little or no thanks from them and even possibly suspicion that you're doing well out of the sale

this week's episode of Wheeler Dealers was about a RR so you might get some info from it but do bear in mind they had a running vehicle and don't pay labour charges for the work, or for towing and a lot else, their cost figures are not very comprehensive

The term "Classic" or RRC has become used for all models of the original boxy shape with round headlamps, not just the ones that were badged as such. There is a lot of interest in them at the moment and you will sell it even as a non runner on eBay. If you want to put some effort into reviving it you will end up with a very saleable car. The days of bobtailing them and throwing them round a bog are long gone. If it really has no chassis corrosion it's a very good basis to start from. Maybe someone like Kingsley Cars or The Land Rover Centre would be worth a call?

Here's a bit of inspiration for you:

The only red from 70 to about 81 was the bright red Masai. In 81/82 they brought in a tomatoey Venetian Red.

The burgundy/wine reds appeared with the major interior and external trim changes of 85.

Assuming its not been messed about then the key dating features are:

Grey bumpers until 1980. Then black. At the same time the black plastic lettering switched to black and white stickers.

85, roughly, saw the front spoiler appear, vertical grill change to horizontal slats and generally the look that went right on to 95. It was also when the colour options expanded and the darker reds, greens and blues arrived. I think that silver was the only metallic colour prior to that from about 82.

Values? Early 70s range from a few K to as much as 80+ for immaculate Velars.

Record so far is the white 4 door rebuild by Kinglsy which went for well over £100k.

As mentioned above, you can slap values right up by just ensuring period parts and tidying up.

70's ones in good shape and original are typically 20-40k now.

If you want to work out what you have then this is probably the best reference site: http://www.range-rover-classic.com

Vertical grill, concealed fuel filler flap deletion of exposed door hinges didn't happen until D plate. Late 86- Early 87.

What year is it? I'm looking for one at the moment, to give perspective, there are several 92-95 V8's on eBay within 50 miles for ~£1500-£2500, I think the earlier ones are a lot more sought after though, but the 90's ones are refered to as 'Range Rover Classic' now.

Last time I looked all the "classic" shape RRs at the 1.5-3K mark were total sheds.

5K seems entry level for anything halfway decent, but values are all over the place - OP two doors (well three) adds plenty of value - you might find this thread interesting -

Yup. Single biggest change to interior and exterior. Vertical grill went to horizontal.

Just from memory. Bought a 1986 Vogue back in 89 from Stratstones at the princely sum of £23,995. Back in the day i covered all of them. 3.5,3.9,4.2.
