£600 what car thread! Exciting stuff

Hi everyone,

i have found myself in a rather unfortunate position, having crashed my rx8 and selling for a £1000 pound loss, i now have £600 to buy myself a car.

Requirements. (or what i can hope for)

something a bit different
would like a nice interior (when i say nice not a bright blue aztec cloth)
reasonably economical (over 25 mpg)
not ridicilous on insurance as im only 19

been looking at the likes of old mercedes c class's, old saabs etc.

Keep your eyes peeled on Gumtree, i've picked up a few cheapies off there

Also check facebook, look for an items for sale page in your local town

Also ssk around mates etc.... someone may know of a car or someone looking to off load something

This - and Gumtree is always worth a look for cars in this price range.

Isn't it a bad idea to buy a car at auction that's so cheap? I mean a small problem could effectively write off the car and everything is 'sold as seen' with no test drive? I know there's no dealer profit to pay but I think maybe it's better to buy privately or buy a dealer PX rather than go to an auction as then you get a test drive.
To OP:
For £600 I'd just buy whatever is in the best condition with full service history to be honest. I'd look for any 'sporty' hatchback or coupe you like the look of that's a 2.0 or less and hope it gives you no major problems.
Most cars that are quite similar drive quite similarly. You just have to get used to the slight differences between them.

Just out of curiosity why did you sell the car and not claim on the insurance was the excess on your policy more than £1000?! I guess it was. Sorry anyway.

I picked up a v reg Volvo s40 for £600 with 8 months mot and a few months tax last year all it needed was gear linkage bushes for £11. Very comfy car and did exactly what it needed to at the time, cheap motoring!

At that price point the rear arches will be a bit crusty but it should be a servicable enough car.

Look after it and you'll get your money back in a years time.
