Tyre talk- what's this?

I was changing some tyres yesterday, both the rear tyres (continental) had visible steps on the tread blocks (failed MOT as dangerous). Upon removal, the inside of both tyres was covered in this:



Is soft to touch, very sticky and about 4mm thick.

What is it? It's not something I've come across before

Conti-seal, a sort of puncture help to seal small hole I think

Worst tyre repair ever then in that case. It's not evenly spread!

Yes it was failed as when you rubbed your hand over it, there was a big difference between each tread block, on a test drive, they were causing a rumble. Much smoother now. (The fronts were just plain bold)

Is it a VW? My CC has done that to all four Contiseals, a saw-tooth type pattern on the inner tread blocks. Sounds like a really bad wheel bearing. Having four Eagle F1 A2s on next week instead.

Unless OP's tyres were low on tread or damaged in some other way then they should not have been failed for this.

What he said. And listed as dangerous as well? There's an MOT tester somewhere that needs a good kick up the arse.

The tyres had between 2-3mm left, so legal on that front. The steps were that bad, you could actually see them, he felt it was the tyre structure failing, so failed it accordingly.

If that's his opinion, then I will agree with him. They have a superb reputation, and made no extra money from this fail (as they don't with any of my cars).

I've changed plenty of tyres due to stepping, however these were by far the worse I've seen.

Well if you're happy then OK, the tester was still wrong though. What was the exact failure that went down on the certificate?

You need to get the toe in sorted then.

It's not my car by the way. He typed his own failure, something about tyre surface and structure. I didn't really pay much notice tbh.

Personally, had I have serviced the car before, I would have advised them to be replaced.
