Today I was offered £200 p/x for my 'X' reg Honda Accord Coupe, against a £1300* car.

3 former keepers, FSH (all Honda but for the most recent service) and 73k miles on it.

Everything works and the car is in fairly good condition overall.

And to top it all, the car I wanted to buy was subject to a £200* "administration fee" - to cover the costs of HPI checks I was told.

What utter bullst!

What a piss take.

  • yep, I know it's cheap car, but everything is relative, and it's a lot to me right now.
  • which made it a £1500 car in reality.

They don't want your car and will just send it to auction. I only got £111 for my S reg Civic with FSH and everything worked. The car didn't owe me anything.

The PX offer is not a piss-take if they don't want your car, and the fact that they have a different view of the value of your car doesn't make them clowns.

They made an offer but you don't have to accept it. You are free to sell the car yourself if you can face the hassle that goes with it, or you can try WBAC or similar and see how their offer compares.

The £200 admin fee IS a piss-take and I would find another garage to deal with.

My dad just sold a 12 year old 1 litre suzuki swift which was 5k brand new for £500.

Advertise it on gum tree (people look locally for cheap cars) and you'll get a good price for it, dealers don't want to take old cheap cars in part ex, it's just hassle for them that they won't really make money on.

Well, I took it to another dealer that buys cars outright, and his top offer was £450 (to buy outright, not p/x).

My expectation was around the £600 mark - which I felt was not unrealistic.

Looking online, I see similar cars on offer for between £1000 and £1600.

So, is the trader then looking to make 6x the p/x value on the vehicle?

Sounds a bit greedy to me..

My sister is looking for a station car after her merc got badly scraped. Where abouts are you?

And I agree-they were taking the wee. Not cool.

Edit, looked on your profile, Yorkshire, nevermind. Bit far. As said above, Gumtree it, take the first decent offer. Good luck.

Surely that would sell in a flash privately.

eBay the car with a 99p start, it'll make what it's worth, then you can go back (or elsewhere) and lowball them on the car you want. Will add a week's delay but you'll be better off financially.

It deserves more than being doomed to a life as a 'banger' running to / from a station.

I know it's probably 'just another car' but hey ho.

It is more hassle than it is worth to the dealer.
If it is going to auction. He needs to pay someone to get it there. etc etc
Much easier to low ball you knowing you will sell it elsewhere.

Heck. List some parts on Ebay and you will get more than your £600.

The trader is looking to make a profit, and is offering you a service (taking your old car off you hands). It is down to them what they offer, and what you accept. It does seem greedy but they need to cover their costs and earn a living.

As above, no-one is forcing you to enter into this arrangement, it's your choice.

There is always someone mug enough to pay them 200 bones per search so why wouldn't they take it?

Personally I wouldn't swap your Honda for a £1300 car (esp not via a dealer). The Honda is probably one of the most reliable cars your could get for the age/money anyway.

As if the profit he's making out of the vehicle I was looking to purchase wan't enough...

Dealer said he was offering it to "the trade" - so it would be collected by said trader.

It's too good to break, and not something I would do anyway.

What did WBAC offer?

If the dealer doesn`t want your car then don`t expect a good offer.

I suspect that's the route I will end up taking - just not sure if I want to deal with muppets (like I did a couple of years ago when I sold my 525i...).

Fair one, but FWIW dont always pre judge. She is a senior practice partner (GP) and even her 'station cars' get looked after rather well. It's just less of a kick though when it's your £500 car that gets a car park rash than your 9 month old merc.

So put it on ebay and sell it private, what are you moaning about?

It's a 14 year old Honda. How long is the MOT?
