I thought it was an absolute load of crap compared to the first two games. Just a total disaster, when the previous games had been genuinely stunning.

I have only just started Dead Space this last week but I have had the game years and I am really enjoying it but I have also read that the first two games are much better than the third instalment.

Not afraid to admit that the first game made me poop myself on numerous occasions and I could not play it in the dark.

Never played the follow ups as I couldn't be bothered with the stress again.

It does put you on edge that's for sure and it reminds me of the days when I played Resident Evil when that first came out just the shock factor that seemed to make you jump all of the time!

Getting the third one for free is still getting ripped off.

Go back and play the first one.

The second one is OK too. But definitely play 1.

Is it really that bad? It scores ok (but not great) on metacritic

It's not great, it's more of a shooter than the first two, but the engine doesn't really work for shooting that well, it's too clunky and clumsy. The first two have the shooting element, but it's interspersed with more exploration, whereas the 3rd installment is just shoot, shoot, shoot, not much tension.

Play the first one with headphones and the lights off - just make sure to keep a spare pair of underpants handy. The opening 5 minutes can be summed up as cutscene, people talking, I'll just look over there, hmm not much going on, wait what is that behind that unbreakable window? Lucky I'm safely behind this OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THAT RUN! RUN! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RUN!!!!!

The first one is a bit of a classic, one of the best games of the PS3 era IMO. It really nailed the space horror thing. The new Alien games looks like it might be one for fans of Dead Space.

I don't know if I am brave enough to play it with headphones and the lights off...it sends big shivers down my spine as normal! its certainly got the scare factor and tension spot on!
