Hyundai Convoy
Discussion
Like the new ad fom Hyundai, tech works better than when volvo stuffed one into a truck demonstrating theirs.

Really cool demo of technology, however I wonder how the systems would work on broken up gravelly roads with patchy/faded markings. Although I guess they're only really designed for motorway use so that might not matter as much.
Would it make a difference, assuming grip was equal for all the vehicles? In that video, at least. Real world, I suspect it wouldn't be as smart. This is cool to see.
About 3 years I went the Netherlands and witnessed a prototype C-ACC (Cooperative Adaptive Cruise) system first hand. In this case it was 3 Prius. They weren't self steering but it showed what a massive difference the 'cooperative' part makes.
Firstly we were shown a demo of the normal ACC. Essentially we drove in convoy (I was in the back of the 2nd car), and the first car braked quite gently to a halt. Because of the lag involved, the system on our car had to brake quite hard to stop the car in time. Car 3 had to brake harder still of course. I'm told it was a bit hairy to be sat in that one as the systems weren't set up for the weight of 5 people.
With C-ACC all cars braked at exactly the same moment and therefore at the same rate, thanks to lead vehicle sending out an 'I'm braking now' message to the other cars, rather than just relying on the radar sensors to monitor the proximity to the car in front.
The above is a much more polished presentation!

Certainly better than Mercedes' attempt to demonstrate their auto-brake system:

Thats interesting Pappagallo, I'd not considered that possibility of the rear cars having to brake harder. I like this technology, someone watching over you, but my reservation is that some will come to rely on it whilst they occupy themselves with something else and one day it wont work.
