Hi All

I post as something of a returnee to cycling, determined to do some exercise in a form that I stand a chance of enjoying. #fatblokeonabike

Aprt from the Sterling House £40 special that I've been using, my last serious biking was way back when I was a teenager. 100mile days weren't too much of a problem then - but severe pie retention and the passing of the 30+ years make that but a faint memory!

Calling into the local bike shop this week to look at getting something a bit better but I was wondering about the favoured apps that people use.

I fiddled with Strava some time ago but then started using MapMyRide - curiously MMR seems to indicate a higher calorie use than Strava did (although that feature didn't seem to work when I tried Strava again this weekend) but I see in the forum that lots of people seem to use Strava & nothing else.

So recommendations please? Why is it so popular? Any other iphone recommendations? I'm looking for something to track the route & provide a few stats along with estimated calorie use.

Any other pithy words of advice equally welcome!

Cheers.

Calories burned, how do you know what to believe?

For tracking the route and cycling I use a Garmin. It gives a calorie estimate too.

Hi, most people use strava because of the segments.
I log my general fitness stuff on endomondo as it's great for general tracking and keeping in touch with friends too. They have challenges too like 2014km cycling this year.

I now have a garmin 200 as the GPS trace is far more accurate on the bike, up loading direct into strava.
I still tend to use endomondo for running as it gives me pace and I can listen to music ??

I use Endomondo and have managed to encourage people from work to join a 1 year challenge. It's quite fun and there's no real competition for the guy at the top but the rest of us consider the guy above the target, and the guy below someone to gloat at (encouraging him in the process).

It's quite fun but considering I ride the same 12 mile route every night, it can log + or - 0.3 miles each time. Not sure if that's the limitation of GPS, my phone or the app itself. It's close enough I guess.
