Inspired by some of the shots in the macro thread, I'm looking to give it a go myself.
Quick question - will a 105mm lens be too long on a (Nikon) crop sensor, or would 70mm be a better option?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You want as long as possible if you are doing nature work. For copystand or product work, shorter is preferable as it is cheaper.

A longer lens gives more working distance, ie more room between you and the subject. The working distance ( ie the shortest distance the lens focuses at ) is the same on crop or ff. However the crop gives more apparent magnification at the shortest focus distance.

The Nikon 105mm is an epic bit of kit in all of its incarnations, you won't be unhappy with it.

However I should point out that the Nikon 85mm AFS VR is the modern version for DX cameras, and is preferable due to size/weight/cost reasons.

I swapped a 60mm for a 105mm to get more working distance - in the studio the 60mm lens could get in the way of lighting. Due to the magnification, VR can be beneficial if handholding and you can afford it.
