I need some more help please.

I purchased this from the bay. I need to wire it to my fuel pump. See pics below.

There is a shortened live and negative bound together. The live is fed into 78 on the relay. The earth has a small O ring at each end. There is a long live that is connected to 80 on the relay. Nothing is connected to 85 and 86, which I'm assuming is the fuse.

I gather the long live is connected directly to the fuel pump live terminal? However, what about the shorter live connected to 78 and the earth bound to it? Or is it the other way around, with the relay at the pump end?

Also, what is the best way to route this? I was considering running this up the inside of the car, perhaps the transmission tunnel and then putting a grommet out of the body near the fuel pump. There's not much room left in the bulkhead grommet.

Cheers
Chuffy

Pins 85 and 86 are the coil (not the fuse). You put pin 85 to ground and apply a voltage to 86 in order to switch on the relay. Pin 87 is the switched output to the fuel pump. Pin 30 is the supply voltage.

This has really confused me. This loom isn't wired like this.

87 has a red terminal with an O ring. There is an earth taped to this, but it doesn't appear to be connected to anything. 30 is the long lead. If this is connected to the battery, then the relay would need to be at the pump end, which would leave the two remaining connections at 87 for the pump?

Ok, I assume the ground cable (black with ring terminals on each end) has just been supplied so that when you connect your fuel pump (positive) to pin 87, you will conveniently have another wire taped to it for the ground for the fuel pump. So, when you mount the relay to the car (usually a metal car which is earthed) you can also mount the shorter end of the earth wire to the car chassis (ground). It has nothing to do with the relay. It's just a ground for the device which you're powering through the relay.

If your fuel pump already has an earth, just cut that wire off. It won't affect how the relay works.

Pin 87 is the positive supply to the fuel pump. In other words, it's the switched output from the relay. So on the red wire with the ring on the end, connect the fuel pump positive.

When you put a voltage on pin 86 (as long as pin 85 is to ground) it will switch on the relay and send volts to pin 87.

It's a standard relay, have a search on google for more info.

I can draw you a diagram in the morning if you like with the extra wire you have.

Why did you buy that ready made thing ? Is it Ford Cosworth ?

Yes please Dan, idiots guide please... this wire connects to this on the pump/ in the footwell etc!!! Where do I draw the live/ earth for 85/86 in the footwell?

Because I couldn't ascertain what cable and relay to use, so rather than get the wrong thing, I purchased one ready made.

Its so easy ,extend the fuel pump live in to the boot and use it for the switch live ,send a ground to chassis and then a live feed back to the pump .I use those self solder joints then a bit of heat sleeve . My relay is hidden just above the petrol tank behind the top panel . (you could fit it under the foot well

As above diagram, splice the ignition live from the fuel pump relay in the footwell (one of the grey coloured relays) and then earth to the battery negative or the earth bolt under the dash. The remaining 30A live would then just run to the live on the pump. Is there a grommet somewhere behind the passenger seat or parcel shelf where I could feed this live cable under the car? I'm thinking about moving the fuse box behind the passenger seat, so this would be an ideal time to sort out the fuel pump live.

Gotta picture of the wire you spliced to your original relay?

Can it be done so there is not two relays in line .. With my setup i must have one next to the ECU and another in the boot .. Why is the original setup so bad ?
