Hopefully this is the best place for this. I've tried a search but couldn't find anything matching what I'm after.

I'm looking for a pair of good headphones. Over-ear (which does mean bigger, but that doesn't matter), closed back, active noise reduction I could live without, they're for home use. £200 - £250 ideally. Maybe more if they're noticeably better.

I've been looking at the likes of Sennheiser, Sony, Monster (NOT Beats Dre rapper bass nutter, but Monster themselves), and a pair from PSB(?).

Does anyone have any suggestions on particular models from any of these brands, or any models from other brands, or even any I should be discounting before I go looking for pairs to test?

Ideally they'll have good sound across across the range from bass to highs, I listen to a variety of music but a decent low end punch certainly wouldn't go amiss smile

All constructive advice welcome thumbup

I've got the bowers and Wilkins P7, I'll advise you to have a listen to them first and any other that may be suggested as it's down to your personal choice on how they feel and sound to you.

I use a pair of BOSE QuietComfort 15.
They are active noise cancellers, but they are exceptionally good and very comfortable which was also a major factor for me.
My only annoyance is that they can't be operated with the noise cancelling switched off; - for home use, you may want to pick up on sounds around you.

I'll have to have a look at the Bose as well, the noise cancelling is something which interests me even if it's not something I need. Never seen what it can do before...

The noise cancelling is quite remarkable. I use them on flights and find that I can listen to quiet passages of music at low levels without any interferance. The Bose are great if you want clarity and precision. Dr Dre Beats are the polar opposite if you want thumping bass. Not that the Bose can't do bass as well though...

Definitely am staying away from Beats. As far as I know they are designed to be silly bass headphones which isn't ideal.

Closed back would be ideal, it blocks out general noise in the street and around the house. I'm in quite a noisy place at work so I like to isolate myself a bit sometimes.

I'm planning on listening to a few on Friday which is when I'm next off work. I may have my mind made up by the end of the day. If I do, I'll report back. Thanks for all the advice smile

I've been buying lots of headphones over the last year or so (Sennheiser, AKG, Soul, B&W, Harmon Kardon)I use them on the train.

I also bought a pair of Grado's, they are fantastic and some way above the others in terms of quality. They aren't closed back, so can't use them on the train though without potentially annoying people.

But for home use they are fantastic.

Ah, your post brought this up to the top of "my stuff", so I will update.

Firstly, thanks for the input from everyone! thumbup

Had a listen to a few pairs today that met the right criteria, went home and pondered for a bit, then went out and bought...the B&W P7's.

I feel they are very well made, closed backs (good for the quieter pieces of music which remain audible despite general household noise), very good sound quality to my ears and because said ears are quite large, they fit over them properly, something which a couple of the others failed to do, or would but only just.

To be honest, they also look great to my eye. There'll probably be a couple of pictures in the "random photos" thread soon hehe

Bit late with my suggestion now that you've bought a pair, but I got a set of Sol Republic Master Tracks for Christmas and they've been fantastic. Was tempted by the Bose noise cancelling set as I bought a pair for my dad a few years ago and they are brilliant, but it liked the looks of Sol Republic's stuff.

Good to see you liked the P7s, how are you listening to them? I haven't gotten far enough to a home listening set up or travelling amp etc yet.

Mostly plugged into an iPad (not making the best of them with that) or either a standard CD player/HiFi, occasionally plugged into an older stack HiFi system.

Everyone else in the house is on holiday for a fortnight at the end of the coming week, so it'll be in the stack HiFi more often smile
