I'm going to Sway for sunday lunch, I know (from past experience) Lyndhurst is a real bottleneck am I bes to go through Burley?

A little difficult to say considering your point of origin is unknown but yes, Lyndhurst is best avoided unless you like to nose around the Ferrari and Maserati dealership.

In that case I'd leave the A31 at Picket Post and go through Burley. It's a nice drive through there, a lot better than waiting for the traffic lights in Lyndhurst.

In which case ALWAYS avoid Lyndhurst. Massive bottleneck as it crawls through the town down the high street.

I prefer these options to Lyndhurst and traffic lights. I was held up by an ostrich a while ago, none of the locals even turned a hair.

Go via Beaulieu? That's the way I go on the way to Lymington. Good excuse for a stop-off at Beaulieu museum

Drive on a little (10mins past Lyndhurst) further and drive along Ornamental Drive, well worth it, especially the side that doesn't go towards Rhinefield House. The part towards Ringwood is a year, and has a lovely pub just off of it (The Halfway Inn)

The picket post advice is right. It's a nice drive through to Burley from there and even on a Sunday Burley won't be too bad to get through.

I pass plenty of fine restaurants en-route (including some in my hometown) which surpass New Forest offerings. On this occasion it's about family, friends & good company not a gourmet experience.

The Burley route was favorite, we came back through Lyndhurst this afternoon and passed a mile of traffic waiting to go through
