640d. What are the 'must have option'?
Discussion
My dad is on the cusp of getting into 640d ownership. He's already decided that the seats in the 640dM Coupe are the ones for him but as for the rest of the options he is low on key knowledge. My father in law has a 640d convertible but other than the M-sport bits is low on other, possibly more important spec. The 640d convertible doesn't come with the multi-function seats which rules it out for my dad as he has running related back issues.
My dad does a Glasgow to Barrow return commute every week so would like things that would make his journey comfortable and enjoyable. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Adaptive drive is a great option on all the f 5/6 series cars it's expensive (circa 3k) but transforms the ride/handling of the car and gives a comfy well damped ride in comfort mode as well as tightening everything up in sport, so might be worthwhile along with the comfort seats.
The high beam assist is very good as well when combined with adaptive lights.
But as they are very well speced from the off, nothing is really must have, it all depends on your wants and needs.

Barrow!? He wouldn't be in the boat building industry would he? (A nods as good as a wink to a blind man as month python used to say
VDC does a lot of the adaptive drive stuff for a grand not 3+
Sports seats aren't much more adjustable than normal SE seats (although I'd never recommend the SE seats). Comfort seats give the full range of movement
The parking cameras are worthwhile
I'd say though in general nothing is really mandatory, it depends on what you like. Head up us great, speed limit diplay useful, sunroom some like but I leave mine closed, comfort access makes life easier, maybe heated steering wheel which my wife has and loves. Stereo is ok (I think it's the same as the first level of upgrade on the 5) but if you like music you can upgrade there. Some prefer the bigger wheels..
I understand why you ask but little is obligatory if you're looking at msport.

Thanks guys. My father in law gets circa 50mpg out of his. He's a bit of an oldy though and rarely even gets to the speed limit on the motorway (one of those annoying people who does 50 on a ns road). I question his choice of vehicle!
Ive suggested hud and adaptive drive to my dad. Hes only 55 so would be able to utilise more of its potential than the other "dad". High beam assist might be of benefit too being north of the border in winter.

He'll not got the benefit out of adaptive drive in my opinion and 3.4k is a lot of cash. I have it and it's advantage is you get a compliant ride but shove it into a corner is stays level and deals with it, it doesn't sound like he shoves it into corners.Ive suggested hud and adaptive drive to my dad. And just in case you do feel the need to push on occasionally, it makes the car feel very agile for its size.

If the 6 is anything like the 5 the standard ride will be less than impressive, in terms of being comfortable. I specced the AD on my 530D and have no regrets. It's a very good ride just wandering along, which I do most of the time and the ability to keep the car level is noticeable even at low speeds.

He'll get the comfy ride with VDC just not the cornering ability. It's each to their own though, you'd hope it was better. If he kept off 20" rims he'd also get a softer ride. If I wasn't bothered about cornering and bigger wheels I'd spend the 4.5k saving on VDC, head up display, speed limit display, heated steering and comfort access and surround cameras. Life is full of choices And just in case you do feel the need to push on occasionally, it makes the car feel very agile for its size.

VDC and adaptive drive are light years apart IMO - but each to their own.

I have just picked up a 17 plate 640d m sport and gave the following:
Adaptive lights
High beam assist
Heads up display
HK sound
20 inch alloys
That, Mr Puresilk, is f**cking fascinating.Adaptive lights
High beam assist
Heads up display
HK sound
20 inch alloys
I wish I had the comfort seats though and adaptive cruise, those are the two things that I think I'd want on top of my spec if I were buying again.
