I was randomly reading about Proton and Perodua the other day, and read that the Peroda Myvi won Car of the Year 2005/2006 award with the Malaysian magazine Autocar ASEAN. The 2013 model is rated quite highly too:

This got me wondering about other cars which may be considered a bit rubbish in one country but respected in another. It's also quite interesting to see the differences in what people want from their cars - I think we just tend to go for massive wheels, bits of tat stuck to the outside and a soft dash.

Perodura Mvyis are Pussy Magnets over here. Well, if you have the "S" version (+17 extra HP, 17mm lowered suspension, leather gearknob).

In other countries people generally favour their own domestic makes, even if by our standards they're not better cars than their competitors.

Saloon versions are more highly favoured over their hatchback siblings (e.g. Jetta vs Golf) in many countries, including (but not limited to) South Africa.

Yep, as opposed to here (UK) when people used to trip over themselves to buy something foreign at all costs (when there was still a choice) smile

The USA is an odd place - Integra is to Honda as Lexus is to Toyota there, but full marks for badge engineering has to be when Honda badged the car we know as the Vauxhall Frontera as the Honda Passport and sold it in the USA. Given its woeful reputation here, lord knows what Honda did to them in the USA to avoid going out of business....

North America too but also cheaper than their hatchback counterparts (if there is one). The press went crazy for the new Corvette Stingray over here and many cited it as the best American car ever (probably more of a lukewarm reception in Europe I imagine).

Curses, yes I do, thank you, but I am fairly sure you couldn't buy a Honda Integra - only an Acura one.

HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) are the Aus equivalent of AMG and the good ol' M division, and are held in similar regard over there, albeit with a 'chavvier' (bogan) image as they're half the price of the German stuff.

Get them over here with a Vauxhall badge and they had no chance. In the US it's a Pontiac GTO, so it at least has no brand image problems, but they gave it the ugliest nose in the world and utterly ruined it, also only importing the fairly restrained (bland) Holden version of the Monaro, not the HSV one.
