Hi all
We'll I've gotten rid of my trusty mk1 focus for a mk2 focus 2008. I love my fords but there's one thing that gets me down, rust. It has started on the rear wheel arches, it isn't a lot but from experience, year on year it becomes very noticeable.
The car I've bought has been so well looked after there isn't a scratch anywhere but rust seems to always be a problem for fords. Is this acceptable to expect rust on a 6 year old white goods car or should I be looking at other makes of vehicle?
Alright it isn't a brand new car but I want this car to look tidy in 5 years time but maybe I just need to accept that everything you buy doesn't last forever.
I've done a little treatment on one of the rear arches where the bumper meets as the paint had completely chipped (bumper rubbing?) so hopefully rust won't start there now as I've sanded down, rust converted and primed there.
What's everyone's thoughts, accept or look at getting rid in the future before it accelerates?

I would look elsewhere, that said our 2007 Galaxy doesnt have a spot of rust on it and generally Fords dont seem to be that bad for rust these days, the Puma and Ka being the most recent exceptions.
Most cars seem pretty good these days so I wouldnt bother with anything that has rust on it, its not like before about 1990 when everything rusted to some degree, seventies Fords were horrendous. I bought a 1990 Audi in about 95 and ran it for five years, it was a revelation, even where it got a scratch it didnt rust, couldnt believe it.

I bet the rust is in the area where the bumper meets the arch. Very common on these and is caused by bumper rubbing as you drive along. Fix is a spacer between bumper and arch.
Yes the bumper has been rubbing on the arch. I will put a spacer there. The car was based near charley, Lancashire so no seaside present but and interesting thought. I'm going to keep my eye on it, keep it for a year and see if it's getting any worse. The most frustrating thing is every time I view a car I never spot the rust until after I've brought the car home. That said I'd have still probably purchased it based on the fsh, 1 owner, condition.
Will bring a mate with me next time to oversee any flaws.
Mazda also have a rust issue just ask any mx5 owner even mk3 are rusting. Mazda 6 and 3 are common for rusting badly I am in the moment of fixing the same issue on a friends mazda 6 and my own mx5 before it goes for sale.
Japanese car don't tend to be that well rust proofed but it does depend where they were made british built jap cars are normally ok jap built jap cars are worse as they don't use salt on there roads.

Also the wife has a Honda jazz 55' plate with quite a bit of rust on the arches. Maybe it's the no thrills, serves purpose cars were buying. Then again Mercedes have had their fair share of bodywork issues.
BMW from the same era as the troublesome Mercs have problems too ... plenty of E46 3 series about with scabby arches, and I read the E39 5 series likes to rust on the bootlid, arches and sills. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
