A1 traffic between Yorkshire and Stanstead

Hi all,

Just looking for info on what the traffic is like down the A1? We're flying from Stanstead in a couple of weeks, and I usually enjoy the trip down the A1 from York. However, our neighbor has just returned from a trip and said that traffic was at a standstill? Looked on the highways agency and it reports only minor delays.

Any ideas?

It really depends - on the time of day and luck - in terms of accidents / events


There are no hugely significant roadworks just now. I did it last Thursday without any delay at all.

But there are hotspots: A46 junction (for instance if Newark show is on, you are kyboshed); Stamford (if Burghley Horse Trials or similar is on); M11 / A14 area (anything can happen); Duxford (if an air show is on, forget it).

Recently came up and down the A1 as part of the journey from Essex to Scotland and back. It was fine both ways; a pleasure infact.

It's a gamble. When it runs smoothly, it's a moderately quiet section of the network; when it goes wrong, it goes wrong quite horribly.

The M11 seems to have had more than its fair share of road-closing nasties in the past few weeks however.

Gf is Scottish so trips from London to the Scottish Borders are relatively frequent. Our typical route is via the A1. Generally I find it pretty decent. There can be congestion in the two lane d/c areas (LOTS of trucks elephant racing) but otherwise it's not too bad.

Aye - I'm a geordie exiled in the Midlands and know every variation of every possible route between Rugby and Durham; twenty years of avoiding jams and accidents!
