Reclaiming a number plate registration

Can anyone help me please. Some years ago I purchased a 1950 Austin A 40 with the aim of getting it roadworthy condition eventually. Ie the car was in a bit of a state and I put it into storage at an old yard. Recently I went to check on it to find that the owners had disappeared with the car. I still have all the details of ownership V5,receipt, service history last tax disc I 1979 etc however regretfully the car was not insured. I am not too worried about the car as I presently could not afford to restore it anyway. However I wondered if there was anyway of retaining the number plate which was valuable.
Would appreciate any advice please.

Only way you can (legitimately) get the number plate off a car that has been off the road for a long time is when the car has an MOT, your chances without the car don't look good.

You'll need a valid mot to transfer the plate....

Looks like you are up a creek without a paddle...

For using? Yes. For transferring the plate off? No. And if it suddenly popped up with a new ticket and "Hello, I'd like the plate, please", it'd almost certainly be called in for an ID inspection first.
