FIXED: Mirror moving down on memory recall
Discussion
All the time since I bought my '08 Vantage the driver's side mirror has been moving down on pressing one of the memory buttons or opening the driver's door (which seems to be the same as pressing memory button #1). It continued trying to move down even after reaching max, clicking until some timeout had been reached.
After much reading on various forums (including Volvo) and playing with the keys - locking, unlocking, swapping, changing batteries... I finally found the solution: Seems like the position sensor (maybe a pot) in the mirror motor was broken. I replaced the mirror motor yesterday and everything is fine now. No more emberassing moments in the parking lot when opening the car...
Here are some quick instructions how to change the mirror motor - should be a 15 minute job, if you know what you're doing (took me 1,5 hours with lots of additional internet research).
Just do everything in reverse order. After attaching the harness to the motor it clips in without much pressure. The mirror needs to be fit with the inboard tag first, making sure the white tags are fitted in their appropriate channel. Push the outboard edge of the mirror with appropriate force until you hear it snap into place.
All those parts are Volvo. I started my research with an S60 (incidentally I was parked up next to one a few weeks ago, so had a good chance to compare), you should be choosing the parts for VINs after -31500.

Remove the Mirror Glass
- Move mirror fully inwards
- Use some flat tool (I used a plastic shoehorn) to lever mirror glass outwards with appropriate force to release it from the outboard clip.
- Move mirror fully outwards
- Remove the mirror glass from inboard clip (should be really simple)
- Disconnect lucar connectors - not really necessary, I left the mirror glass between door and mirror housing
Remove the Mirror Motor
- The mirror motor is simply clipped into position on three studs, so start pulling / levering it out starting with the most inboard one. Older Volvo versions are held with three screws, maybe you need to undo those on older models.
- Disconnect the motor harness
Putting it back together
