ML - 2009 - 21" AMG wheels are horrid...
Discussion
You do not say what version of the ML you have.
Here are two links to MB's lists, the first for AMG wheels, the second for all types:

Yours is a type 164. If you click the relevant link it will open a PDF in German (but it's very easy to understand) listing the available permutations in full.
A 63 AMG needs a minimum 9.5 x 19 ET46 running 295/45 ZR 19 tyres.
All but the ML420, ML500 and ML63 AMG can go down to 7.5 x 17 ET 56 running 235/65 R 17 tyres.
The ML420 and early ML500 need a minimum of 8 x 18 ET 60 running 255/55 R18 tyres. Late-model ML500s need a minimum of 8.5 x 19 ET 58 or 60 running 255/50 R 19 tyres.
The speedo will not be out as the rolling radius is the same on each variation. What you lose in wheel width you make up in tyre sidewall. Hence the crumby ride/handling on big wheels.
