Brothers MK5 Golf Diesel has ran out fuel...

I seem to remember reading that you shouldn't let diesels run out of fuel. Will he be okay just chucking some more in and restarting? Or is there a method to doing so or should he call out the AA.

It certainly doesn't do the injectors a lot of good and he'll likely have to have the system bled before it'll fire up.

If it was me I'd not try running it without a proper bleed, even if it does try to start.

Probably worth putting a new fuel filter on while he's at it.

Well he off to try start it, im not getting too involved with it. God knows how you run out of fuel when the car has a computer telling you how many miles you have left. Bloody dopey 21year old.

I ran out of fuel in my old Citroen C4 HDI. Under the engine vanity cover was a hand pump that pulls the diesel into the system manually before firing it up.

RTFM. Or call a VW dealership and ask advice. The only thing dumber than running out of fuel is asking folk on the internet for advice when you have no idea whether they know what the hell they are talking about.

Some modern diesels self prime.
I know on a bmw you just turn the ignition on (or press the button once) and leave it and it starts to pump and prime itself. Normally as you have fuel in it, it does it instantly.

Try turning the ignition on, but not turning it over a couple of times?

Keep your knickers on. I'm busy at work at a computer so thought id see if anyone on PH has been in a similar situation with the VAG diesel engine.
