Bathurst in the wet: Time For Tea?

Intimidating enough in the dry, Bathurst proves a whole lot more so when it's raining

Sometimes, not too often, a gem of a YouTube channel turns up. Rather embarrassingly, the V8 Supercars official channel wasn't actually on the PH subscription list before today. Shameful really given how active the channel is and the variety of the videos. That's been corrected now and certainly we'll feature something from it again in future.

Our first pick is from a playlist entitled 50 Greatest Bathurst Moments. From what we've seen already (research, of course), there are some cracking videos in there. Today's vid is called 'When Seton Slid The Skyline', which grossly underplays the driving display of the V8 Supercars legend.

The heavens had opened at the 1987 James Hardie 1000 but such is the climate at Mount Panorama that sections of the track remained dry. So Seton remained on slicks, wildly oversteering his way round huge portions of the track. See in particular the yump over the Conrod straight (from 1:20) where the Skyline gets a wiggle on at the worst possible moment.

The quality isn't great but you won't struggle to see what's so engrossing about this video. What a drive!

Great clip. Seton is regarded as one of the best drivers to have never won on the mountain. You can waste all afternoon watching Bathurst clips on YouTube - couple of my favourites...

This was the first race I ever recorded on VHS when shown on Grandstand (or WOS) and Bathurst has been a favourite track of mine ever since.

Fantastic place and I wish one day to be able to do a lap.

It was on Grandstand. Also the first race I ever recorded! Was 13 years old and watched it again and again until,the tape wore out! One of the M3s had a big one on top of the mountain, Brock was sliding the works Commadore all over the place, one of the Eggenberger sierra's won, but was the thrown out for dodgy fuel and I think they gave the win to Brock.

Fantastic stuff. Was a round of the only ever season of WTCC in that era. The FIA canned it after one season. Apparently because the show was too good and they were worried about it overshadowing F1. Not sure the needed to have worried with 1000bhp 1.5 litre turbos in F1 at the time.

Come it think of it they were still running Group B cars in the British Rally Championship at the time. All of this was available on a Saturday afternoon for free on Grandstand.

Great days. Is it any wonder I got into Motorsport with this sort of stuff on the box every week. Makes today look a bit tame really.
