Evening all,

Just had a call from a work colleague that there has been an accident involving his company car.

Seems that a driver had a head on into his wife's car, which then hit his other car which was SORN (and off the road - and uninsured) and this then hit our company car.

To make matters worse, the driver then legged it from the scene.

The police are dealing with it as we speak but as far as any damage to our company car, what's the procedure in this case - mainly as it's an uninsured vehicle responsible for the damage to ours.

Would our insurance company merely head to the next responsible party down the line - i.e. his wife's insurance company?

Needless to say, this is a bit of a delicate situation and as long as no-one was hurt, that's the major thing but i'd rather have my facts about me before i start to get our insurance brokers on the case.

Thanks in advance.

Logically isn't the driver that hit the parked cars at fault for the damage caused to all vehicles?

Of course insurance doesn't seem all that logical.

As it's a company car I assume it's fully comp ?

If so just let insurance co fix it

After all it's what you pay them for

Yeah, it's all fully comp but the last thing i want is for them to start claiming the costs back from the other persons insurance i.e my co-director. Could make morning coffee time a bit frosty...

If it goes back to the driver who caused the accident, that's no problem.

The insurance company wouldnt ask a policyholder to reimburse the cost of a claim unless there was an indemnity issue on it i.e. non named driver or other issues. The insurer can look however to prosecute the driver of the TP vehicle (if known) however depending on the assets of the driver it can cost more than you'd recover. Either that or they can approach the MIB under the uninsured drivers act.

So it isn't a case of a hits b hits c and then c claims from b claims from a?

I was always under the impression that was the case.

It would be nice to get hold of the numpty who legged it - prosecution wise, not round the corner with a couple of slaps wise!

All the insurers would hold the negligent driver at fault even though your car technically was damaged by somebody elses.

This is what you pay insurance for at the end of the day - to cover your vehicle incase of loss.

Let them sort it out smile

I need a diagram. How does someone have a head on into your wife and damage 2 others cars one of which is off the road?

Not saying it's imposible just my limited imagination. Private car park?

Not my car but my work colleagues. From what i understand, third party came off the roundabout near to his home at a daft speed (based on the damage done to the first car).

Head on into car 1 (his wife's Pug 206), this hit into car 2 (saxo) which was on the grassed over bit between road and pavement (so technically off road) and then this hit car 3 (our car) which was on the road.

I'll know better once i've seen the photo's tomorrow at work.

A grassed over bit between the pavement and the road doesn't sound like the kind of "off road" that the DVLA were thinking of.

I guess we'll find out this morning when things are investigated further. Not sure what (if any) ramifications there would be if it was decided that the car actually wasn't "off-road".

From the sounds of things, the first car is a right off, the second one is damaged beyond repairable cost and is a right off as well.

The poor sod has went from a 3 car family to 1 damaged car in one fell swoop. Luckily he doesn't have to drive to Manchester airport in the next fortnight for his holidays...

Bit of a clarification on this after speaking to the lad i work with.

By the time he got outside the front of his house, the two front passengers in the third party car were already out and running away. The police were already there as they were just about to start their shift at the station (10pm) and heard a car racing outside and then a massive crash (station is walking distance away). The WPC didn't even have her note book when she got to the accident.

The two female passengers were just about to get out the back of the car and leg it when the lads with basically said "oh no you fking aren't" and they were detained at the scene until ambulances could take them to be checked out.

Driver (who was subsequently caught along with passenger and were drunk) came off roundabout, swerved to other side of road, then swerved back to avoid an oncoming car, swerved again onto the correct side of the road and then swerved into the first car at an angle.

The Pug's front wheel is now part of the a-pillar.

This then bounced the car in the air to the point that it landed on the front / bonnet of the Saxo (which i've subsequently found out IS insured) and raised the back end of that off the ground. The Saxo has then spun around the Passat, missing it completely and ended up about 45 yards away on the other side of the road, hitting nothing at all.

The third party car was actually the one which hit ours. The rear bumper was caught on the corner and after a bit examination, no metalwork on the car is damaged, only the bumper. It's not even worth claiming for to be honest - replacement Ebay bumper and get it fitted by our local body shop and job done. He's drove it to work

Quite how there wasn't more damage (after seeing the photos) is beyond me. Any of the cars could have ended up hitting other cars or even smashing into my friends house, such was the impact of the accident. It didn't even hit his front fence!

Thanks for the advice on here - i think this thread is now finished and it seems to be resolving itself in a fairly straight forward manner.
